Are caltrops still relevant on the modern battlefield?

Depends on terrain and enemy vehicles, we are seeing them used in Ukraine because both sides are using pneumatic tyres but the ground is generally too soft for small anti-personal caltrops to be penetrate a boot without just being pushed into the ground.

Why wouldn't they be? Ridiculously easy to spread and stepping on or driving over them is going to ensure you have a bad time.
Also, how the fuck did that happen? Any more details?

>>64070676
Even if it doesn't penetrate fully if it just sticks it'll still be a pain in the ass. If you've ever had goat heads stuck to the bottom of your shoe you know those fuckers are annoying. Now imagine they're the size of a quarter and caked in mud.

Seems great for home defence, useless for the battlefield, just use concertina wire and landmines.

How does that even happen? No way you'd let it penetrate that deeply before reacting when accidentally stepping on it.
Did the guy jump on it?

Concertina and land mines are harder and riskier to put in place. Caltrops can be deployed all sorts of ways including in ways that don't require a single one of your soldiers to be within 50+ miles of the site. You can safely get caltrops to places you couldn't hope to set up anything else.

Unless you're a giant, I don't think goat heads would be getting stuck to your shoes. I'm not sure why you'd be stepping on them to begin with, though. They're pretty easy to avoid.

Really depends.
If it passes cleanly between the bones, then it'll be completely fine in a few weeks
If it shreds some tendons and ligaments on the way, well... that complicates stuff

Two pieces of half-inch reo rod bent at 90degrees, weld together and cut a point on them will fuck up even big truck tyres.
So if you need to cripple logistics they work and surprisingly hard to see

They didn't fuck around back in the day. This is a mix of antitank mines and bouncing anti-personnel mines with deploying tripwires for wider area coverage. Compared to the older days it's actually a more tame landmine load and density. In Vietnam they were dropping cluster bomblets alongside delay fused versions and boobie trapped ones by the bucketload to kill the enemy, deny the area for reinforcements and prevent the enemy from reusing the unexploded ones as landmines against US forces. It also made it harder to keep track of incoming air attacks and find a pause between them to move compared to previous tactics using exclusively regular contact fused cluster bombs.

That what landmines fulfill as well as hidden holes kind of like gopher holes to break a soldier's leg.
Thick combat boots prevent caltrops from having full effectiveness.

No, not at all. Why would you even think that? A m long, 1m deep minefield is utter useless. You have to make it long enough that going around is hard and deep enough that breaching it is also hard. Really, what was your train of thought that led to to think that the webm was in anyways overkill?

The mine is made to land in an upright position via either drag or spring-loaded legs, then it shoots out a couple of very thin trip wires in all directions that lead to an electrical sensor that detects when any of them is pulled with small enough force that they don't require an anchor point on the other end. This can lead to some false detonations if the mines land in some densely vegetated area on a windy day but there's still enough density to deter the enemy movement.

Soviet version, but still I assume US has similar devices. Can be deployed with rocket artillery, helos and airdrops

Yeah, soviets stole the design directly from US, then developed this variant that's purely mechanical in the late 80s because soviet batteries were absolute trash and they didn't have any heated warehouses to store them in.

This one isn't airburst but the newly developed POM-3 russians are using in Ukraine right now is. It's also quite a bit larger than US mines which even fit inside 155mm artillery and can be deployed in a cluster bomb format rather than just dropped from a dispenser like older systems.
