Why did these fall out of favor?
The ring wing is an incredibly stable flight design that would be ideal for low-cost drone production.

Kept getting into genocidal squabbles with the left wing designers so the center wings managed to consolidate power.

Isn't it just a biplane that's difficult to design and produce?

Lockheed tried to commercialize it a few decades ago because the design is really innovative, but costs and design difficulties kept it from becoming a reality. The ring design is extremely efficient, and makes a slow, stable aircraft that would be conductive to efficient long distance flight.

Lockheed claimed their designs were incredibly fuel efficient, like 30% or more over a traditional design. If you were designing a loitering drone or something for aerial refueling something like this would be huge.

A lot of the aerodynamic losses are from wingtip vortices. The ring wing get around this by eliminating wingtips.
