It's not really possible to make bulletproof chainmail. Even if you use a tough enough alloy and small enough rings that a bullet won't be able to pass through or burst the rings, it will still displace the mail to a sufficient degree to wound you by just forcing the mail into your flesh. Rigid armor is the only truly effective counter to gunfire.

I made some out of 12 gauge carbon steel and proofed it with a 22lr in high school.
Really fucking heavy though

If you want a weaved bulletproof material kevlar is your best option.
If you really want chainmail you are going to have to weave a hardenable armour steel and find a way to evenly quench it when you are done. Then you are going to need one hell of a gambeson to wear under it to absorb the blunt force and catch the bullet fragments that pass through.

I'm not saying it's impossible just it's a terrible idea with much better options.

Perforated plate of enough thickness and matching hole size is pretty good at deviating and shattering the bullet against even tungsten.

For the example I used I made a 10x10 swatch of 12ga high carbon steel and it was heavy. They always talk about plate armor being heavy but chainmail is heavier. The rings were between 0.7 and 0.75, I can't remember and there wasn't a gap so 4 rings very tightly closed around each other.
I wanted to test .25 ACP and .32 ACP on it but all I had was a 10/22. If it stopped .22lr with no damage I think it would have stopped jacketed copper too.

Absolutely, and yes if you can buy the materials.
To start with, you need a very strong but flexible material, secondly you need the mesh of the links to be super tight so bullets don't just go between them.
The good news is that someone already makes that material and weaves it tight enough for that use. It's called KEVLAR, you STUPID FUCK.

I guess you could overengineer chain mail to the point of being somewhat bulletsproof, but why not start out with something that doesn't have fucking holes in it?

ceramics, steel, UHMWPE and titanium aren't abysmal at stopping spitzer bullets, just woven kevlar. it's really bad because the pointed tip just pushes the fibers apart and slips through with minimal resistance. even against pic related in 9mm, which can defeat basically any kevlar body armor on the market. only epoxy molded kevlar helmets fare a bit better but not massively so.

this doesn't apply to just kevlar, other aramids or fiberglass or to a lesser extent carbon fiber all suffer from the same issue due to being woven materials.

If you make chainmail thick enough it'll stop most bullets.
It's going to be heavier than a rigid plate, and you're going to feel every tiny amount of the pain that comes with getting shot, and you'll have an intimate idea of what pain feels like as it breaks every one of your ribs, but it'll stop the bullet.

Chain mail is just a collection of holes for bullets (or arrows if we apply the era-relavant reference).
Also possible additional shrapnel depending on how bad the bullet hits.

cody's lab made welded and tempered chainmail out of 1/4" thick chain or something. it might even stop rifle rounds but it weights a fuckton and with enough power it'll get sucked into the wound along with the bullet all the same.

There's no real benefit to making chainmail that thick because a plate will do the same thing and weigh less, and probably not kill you while stopping the bullet.

While obviously heavier for equivalent protection compared to a solid plate, there is fucking zero chance of small arms having the momentum required after loss from deformation of bullet and target to force a quarter inch chain deeply into your body.

Cody's lab on youtube made a set of chain mail that was pistol resistant. It was made out of real 3/8ths inch chain.
>Heavier than comparable kevlar protection.
>I say resistant because it wasn't gapless and I fear spalling would be a motherfucker.
Chain mail is for knives or bites.
