Congratulations, you now have a vehicle that is 1/5th as tough as a mech because it had a tiny fraction of the areas for a projectile to hit, and which is immensely vulnerable to through-armor critical and mobility critical hits.

Additionally, your shit vehicle is now more expensive than a mech because of all that tech and still needing a crew of 3 or more.

That really is just a narrative thing. There's nothing actually different about their armor and weapons, they have a different ratio of firepower and mobility but their protection should realistically be better, aside from their relatively exposed motive systems.
>>64081219
Again it's just a narrative thing. The rules dump a bunch of extra crit and motive hit locations onto the vehicle's hit tables, as well as making the angles that determine which table to use less forgiving. Tanks can take rear armor hits from enemies that any reasonable person would say are in front of them.

But I've played combined arms games with custom rules that make the hit tables fairer and the mechs still can't be dispensed with, there's no substitute for that specific blend of mobility, armor and firepower they bring. Helicopters can't take the return fire and tanks just can't move like mechs.

Those TACs should be a lot harder to achieve because the armor should be thicker, what with it being spread over a smaller surface area. The build rules don't let them have as many points of armor as they ought to because the engines are over-weighted. You also can't be certain everyone will die if one hit penetrates, we already have tanks IRL that put their vitals between the hull and the crew to keep the latter alive, like the Merkava placing its engine up-front. Still a mission/mobility kill but not total annihilation.
>>64081288
Never seen anything in the lore that even suggests this, but there's plenty that suggests otherwise. All of the upgrades and alternative munitions for missiles play around with different guidance systems, or removing the guidance in the case of Deadfire missiles.

There is literally nothing stopping someone from annhilating mech players with conventional units. Infantry with field guns, aerospace fighters strafing, and a horde of conventional vehicles are all extremely powerful and well within the rules. You'd wreck the mech player through sheer initiative sinking alone. But, it's very tedious to play with a lot of units and Battletech is a big robots fighting game, so people want to fight their big robots against other people with big robots.

Lasers are damage-over-time weapons that leave a visible light trail. They need to be kept on target for the duration of their burst to do full damage. You can take evasive action if you see a laser starting to hit you. Mechs that move fast and are bobbing will naturally spread the damage of the laser over multiple sections of the mech. Tanks are just a single piece of armor and slow, so lasers are generally always going to fuck them up with high efficiency.

What makes lasers super effective is when you fire 12 of them at once and have enough cooling to do it 2 more times before overheating.

Laser CIWS and other CIWS along with smart jamming will make slow drones ineffective simply because they will get shot down before reaching their target. A small FPV is flying at 50kph. Even the world record FPV that was chasing F1 cars is still too slow. Which leaves guided missiles which will need to be moving very fast for the same reason.

Walkers are generally without advantage compared to a traditional vehicle. Both die when killed. Both are big targets vulnerable to computer image processing.

After that, Solaris would be available and i'd make bank in the light and medium tournaments. Then it was time to get back into the campaign in an Assault where i would solo missions for max profit. Compare a Scorpion tank to a PHK, and tell me which is likely to win in a lance-on-platoon fight. By TRO3058, the gap had closed somewhat, thanks to tanks like the Regulator, Alacorn, and Challenger.

So, if you were around in the '80s and early '90s, you got used to tanks being cheap militia trash with the occasional exception (e.g., Patton, or the mobile minefield that is the Demolisher). If you discovered BT during or after the "eternal '56" period, then you probably have more respect for tanks, because some of them are better (and on occasion absurdly expensive).

It's the height of franchise popularity, it's where a lot of players started, and it cleanly divides the factions into two sides while massively simplifying the politics of the setting. For analogy, it's the difference between wargaming the Wars of Austrian Succession including related conflicts and WW1. Plus since a lot of players have disliked various narrative and mechanical directions that have come later and it being perfectly fine to play games set in earlier time periods you get a lot of games that default to the Clan invasion.

Shame really, I think the ilClan era has a setup that could make for some really great developments but the people running the franchise are basically idiots.

The smallest laser class can kill planes 30km away, 10 km high with one shot.

Yes, they are stupid, it took 27 years before the BETA on earth started to get smart.

The BETA are carbon based biological mining machines created by silicon based lifeforms. They are programed to only view silicon life as sentient.

The BETA never viewed humanity as actual sentient lifeforms. Every single BETA class is ment for mining. It is only later that the BETA start to change and develop dedicated classes ment for combat. About the same time that the muv luv alternative/eclipse plot is happening.

Well now, I'm not sure if the problem is that the given ammo is any different from the last game, although if it is different, it's not enough. It may also be that the levels throw way more mechs at you to compensate for the Clan mechs having so many advantages.

It also just feels as if my missiles are simply less effective. I used to love the early patches of MW5:M, where the drop ships would dump mechs on top of you. I used SRM boats and would demolish whole lances within seconds of meeting them. LRMs also felt powerful if you massed them. I loved my Catapults and Stalkers because they could do serious damage at range, without running out of ammo instantly. Maybe this was because of the tiered weapons and pilot skills, though.

The real flaw of the Zaku is probably in it's fluid joint system giving it sluggish controls under duress, which is why you see them struggle in CQB situations vs GMs which has field motor powered joints which yielded superior reaction time for melee and the like. The Gouf and the Dom were specifically designed with MSvsMS combat in mind whereas that was initially an afterthought of the Zaku II, that is the "problem" with it

Armored Core type mechs make sense from a "why does this exist" viewpoint, even if the mechs themselves just ignore physics entirely with how much power they would need for their thrusters.
They're basically highly armored attack helicopters that can move on ground level to avoid detection+use the ground to quickly change directions to evade missiles etc and their role is suitably attack helo-y, that is to say
>Punch in as fast as possible, fuck up a target, and get the fuck out again before being overwhelmed or hit by direct counters ie; high altitude bombers or lasers, swarms of low cost units, etc
Don't think of them as bipedal robots, think of them as attack aircraft with seriously oversized landing gear so they can just slam into the ground at 300 kph and keep moving.

The whole point of an Armored Core is that it is a highly modular multirole craft. The Armored Core is not the mech, but is a system of systems and it can excel in virtually any combat role required, whether you need a precision strike craft or heavy artillery. In other ways they are more advanced than us but the setting has like 1000 years on us so that's sorta a given regardless. Also a common misconception is that BT weapons can't shoot past like 600 meters. They absolutely can, it's just their effective accuracy is almost zero and their damage drops off dramatically. Steam Deck. Iron Rebellion is the new Mechwarrior Online now.

Manned walkers are yesterday's news. Hordes of little clankers armed with munitions is the future.

Have you not seen the trailer for ACVI? It shows parts of the augmentation surgery that Raven goes through. He's covered in bandages, like a mummy.

>battletech armor makes modern cannons obsolete
Which is fucking dumb. If that was the case pretty much every other weapon would suffer, SRM's/LRM's, PPC's, Guass Rifles anything that deals damage as a single projectile to include models of Autocannons.
>MW5 Rifles
Are fantastically balanced and useful, Light Rifles make AC2's nearly obsolete, Medium Rifles are a godsend for Maurader/Rifleman/Shad and Heavy Rifles are fucking GOD TIER. A Kaiju/Annilalator with 4 HR's delete most Mechs in a single volley and can do this nearly 1km away.

It actually IS explained in early novels- even a medium laser can hit a building out to the horizon, moving targets are just a huge problem - in part because of rampant ecm.

Also stackpole is a bad author, so he just uncritically rolled with tabletop ranges.

A laser shouldn't have any problem hitting moving targets. How are you going to ECM visual acquisition?

You aren't. This guys is just obsessed with "ECM" and thinks it can do anything. He's crazy.

The issue is hitting and holding. The laser has to hit the same point during the duration of its burst for maximum effect

He's not wrong. Mechwarrior as an IP is owned by Microsoft while Battletech is owned by Topps. The setting's IP is totally fractured due to the creators hapazardly selling things off before the original company imploded. At the same time, calling the setting "mechwarrior" is a sure sign that they don't know anything about it.

For the exact same reason of compressing the play space as the tabletop game. Shorter ranges means smaller maps and shorter, more intense fights.

You're the kind of person who actually enjoys those idle mobile games. Inferno srms and frag lrms make incredibly short work of infantry.
