M855A1 is the best all purpose 5.56 load full stop. Barrier blind, pierces all known PE plates and the majority of steel, even basic Level III ceramics, and good terminal ballistics.
Nammo Powerball is better in theory if you're in an armor rich environment but it's impossible to get. All of the true APs like M995 / AP4 have ass terminal ballistics.

The lead-free aspect and the improved barrier penetration are nice to have, but the real purpose and crowning achievement of M855A1 is that it's not yaw sensitive and doesn't have a long neck before expansion, because it fragments by hydraulic force peeling back the jacket like a JHP instead of snapping at the cannelure. It also has a significantly lower velocity threshold for fragmentation - about 1900 fps. You can have a 10.5" barrel and it will frag out to 200 yards.

I remember the heaviest non-experimental 5.56 is actually the 150gr sub from PRL. Tungsten-tin blended metal fragmenting. There was a 163gr duplex load from vietnam but I don't think it went past prototype. Liberty had a tungsten 110-grain that was supposed to be subsonic AP I think. They also had an M855A2 if you wayback machine their website.

it's doable if you focus primarily on beating ceramics and PE. Steel gets chomped by anything going fast. If you remember the Le Mas controversy from 2005, they fooled Army brass into thinking repainted 37gr Varmint bullets, reloaded pissing hot, were AP because 3,600ft/s 5.56 beats 1/2" MIL-46100.

Nah, m855a1 is overrated. Its more of a better 62gr controlled chaos than anything. We know sub caliber penetrators are pretty trash post barrier from years of m855 use vs common barriers. 77gr TMK is a significantly better load for any situation in which cover isn't a concern. If it is then 75gr GD loaded to 5.56 pressure is the best general purpose load outside of the Hague concerned.

Which works if you're good enough and in a position to do that. If not? Your TMK means nothing to a competent ceramic or PE plate. All the while M855A1 can punch a large variety of plates fine AND still has good terminal ballistics. You don't have to take the extra time to aim around armor unless it's M855A1-rated. Even then, rapid consecutive M855A1 will degrade a strike face faster than TMK.
Also account for shields, rifle rated helmets, windshields.

Do yourself a favor and check out the thread on rokslide called .223 for bear, elk, and moose. It's long but a ton of good info and real world results. Long story short the 77gr TMK is notably superior in terms of on target performance(assuming barriers aren't involved) compared to anything else on the market. Plenty of penetration, wound cavity like a 2 liter bottle through organs, exits are usually 2.5" or so. It's got a really effective blend of fragmentation, penetration, and expansion. It also has extremely good external ballistics and a low fragmentation threshold(around 1700fps IIRC).

Big assumption but true. A double stockpile of M855A1 and TMK is probably the "I'm rich" meta unless you've got a connection for tungsten. Even then 5.56 struggles with good Level IV plates that aren't boron carbide or relatively low quality Alumina.
There is no known 5.56 load full stop that can reliably pierce an XSAPI unless you're willing to reload M995 using NAS3 and a 24" musket to 3,650ft/s.

It's correct that m855a1 is better against armor but it isn't better enough that the answer changes from "shoot where the plates aren't".
>>64087395
Yea, nah, we did the whole "the harder metal little penetrator means it'll work fine through barriers" thing with m855. I'm not buying that a1 is better at that specific task, let alone better enough that it's superior to 75gr GDSP until I see real world proof.

I agree that within the narrow confines of being forced to shoot people in their body armor while not being allowed actual AP loads that m855a1 is superior. I don't think that makes it a superior general purpose load considering it's worse at everything else than the alternatives.

You're overestimating the typical quality of armor in the US. M855A1 only fails to defeat modern SRTs, some "III+" like the Hesco 3411 and LTC 19513, and all certified Level IV (M2AP > M855A1) plates. The average asshat is running a $50 piece of shit Chinese white label Ceramic or PE, or Level III steel. M855A1 will easily handle those. Any hits from TMK likely won't count.
M855 and M855A1 alike easily clear common all-PE plates. A1 will do it at further range and will clear nearly all steel plates as well or better than M193 at 3,300ft/s.
M855A1 is hugely better than TMK against armor. For the public with no access to M995 (which has F-tier terminal ballistics) M855A1 is the better generalist.

Well, yes, but with what loads? M80A1 is strictly superior to M855A1 against armor, but still fails to defeat good certified Level IV plates. M993 defeats many IVs at the magic ticket velocity of 3,050ft/s, but how are you getting M993?
Even then, XSAPIs / Adept Colossus will handle that. M1158 is the magic ticket but hard as balls to get.
If you're using basic .308, it is inferior to M193 / M855A1 vs steel and inferior to M855 / A1 vs PE, only better than either against a very specific subset of SRT plates like the Hesco L211 / RMA SRT.

>M855A1 will not crack III+
Just to clarify this, III+ isn't an official NIJ rating and can mean anything set by the mfg. M855A1 will easily handle III+ from AR500 or other shit steel. Easily handle III+ PE plates rated to handle M193. Will handle ceramic III+ rated to M193 / M855 like the first gen RMA 1092 or Hesco 3611. Will lose however to stronger III+ like the Hesco 3411 / RMA 1092 G2 / LTC 19513. M80A1 will handle those fine.
Any opponent worth their salt will run plates optimized to M855A1 / M80A1 defeat at the minimum weight like the superb LTC 28570, which handles both @ only 4.38lb standalone.

Armor is complicated man.

You talking about those 4400s? NIJ-suspended because of improper heat treatment on the strike face. While there was a recall it cannot be definitively proven all problematic plates were recovered. The NIJ FIT test that prompted the recall is only done yearly for ISO:9001 certed mfgs. I think Botach is still selling those for that price, actually, if anyone is interested.
We're a minority. Average dipshit thinks even $100 is too much per plate. Botach was selling $50 Level IVs years ago which IIRC could only stop M855A1 half the time. They were popular, sure, but M855A1 is up for that challenge.

The 4401s are fine. The recalled Hescos were the 4400, 4600, 3410, 3610. However, what has to be kept in mind with the 4401 is that it's an antiquated ceramic-fiberglass budget design. Here's a fun fact about ceramic plates. NIJ 0101.06 section 7.6.2. Minimum shot to shot distance is 51mm, two inches. What does this mean? If a plate is struck twice and the second hit is within 2", it does NOT have to stop that second hit.
Better yet, that's for Level III plates rated for six hits of 7.62x51mm M80. Level IV plates only have to stop one .30-06 M2AP. No other ballistic test required. This means 7.6.2 does not apply and shot spacing requirement can be wider!
If you can degrade the strike face, follow up hits of M855A1 to the 4401 only have to face fiberglass and will easily perforate. It's only rated for three M855A1 for the ENTIRE plate IIRC. TMK will be a lot easier because it lacks a steel penetrator, is same diameter, and not significantly more energetic.
This is true for all Level IV minus plates rated to both III and IV, or those that use either a crack arrestor or a tile / pellet strike face.

NIJ is not linear. IVs are sidegrades from Level IIIs that use more strike face and less backer (why they're often cheaper!) to focus on singular AP threats. In other words, IVs are counter sniper, good IIIs are gunfight plates.

Are they 4400, 4401s, 4403s, 4600s, 4601s, or 4800s?
Hesco's best Level IV is the 4601, because it is rated to both III and IV (6x M80). The second best is the 4403, which is 7.7lb and heavier than the older 4401.
Hesco's "problem" is that they underbuilt their earlier plates enough that a mere strike face hardening issue was enough to get rounds through.

RMA and Highcom's plates are worse than Hesco's lineup. Armor is complicated and it is sketchy as hell.

They do, but keep in mind certification is large batch (several dozen) plates and also includes unannounced follow up tests done by NIJ. Frequency is every two years for ISO:9001 cert, yearly for non-cert. A mfg can handpick plates for lab or youtube plates. Certification shows that every plate, including yours, meets requirements. Lab tests only show one. The only cert for the 4401 shows it can stop M2AP once. It can do more, absolutely, IF the spacing is wide enough and within the fair hit zone of shot-to-edge. NIJ 0101.06 7.6.1, cheat ring rule! All shots must be at least two inches from the edge. The strike face here goes all the way to the edge, but nothing is stopping it from being thinner... because shots outside the fair hit zone are "unfair."
Another point for M855A1.

For a fun side note, RMA once sent a 1192 Level IV plate to Buffman for a youtube test that was literally 10oz heavier than advertised.

I agree with this guy. I think it's hypocritical that we can aim around armor to make up for TMK's inability to pierce plates but cannot aim for the vitals to circumvent M855A1's moderate disadvantage in terminal ballistics.
Shot placement is key. M855A1's barrier and armor superiority, coupled with its very good ballistics all around, are why it is THE gold standard of 5.56.
It singlehandedly shut up the 6.8 SPC debate - founded entirely on M855's weaknesses. TMK is better in a magical world where no armor above IIIA exists. Absolutely, but plates are mainstream. Prepare for them.

It is still defeated by Level IV. Train with the mindset errbody has Level IV because anyone competent does.

You have it. I have it. Goobers have it. You need to be a knuckle dragger to not aspire for it.

This phrasing is more agreeable, but I think that's more of a dice roll modifier then a capability. If you have m855a1, you are killing it and life and don't let me slow you down.

It just isn't the main appeal of the bullet.

M855a1 is not some mythical round. Im not saying its bad though, Ive zipped vbieds, cars, and people with belts of 855a1 and m995. These rounds are highly velocity and placement dependent. At close range hit the enemy first and preferably in the face. At longer ranges tmks are better IMO. If you somehow have access to m855a1 or stole some congrats i guess

Absolutely. TMKs are much better for long range precision work, but the buck stops there. M855A1 is the better all-purpose especially in today's armor rich world.

The tungsten core will give it an edge over M855A1 against cheap Alumina Level IVs and especially against Boron Carbide - which is used in the lightest Level IVs but suffers from amorphization against tungsten core threats. ESAPIs are Boron Carbide. ESAPIs revision A to F will lose to M995 at 3,350ft/s. Powerball is closer to M995 here than M855A1.

Unlike M995, Powerball still has good terminal ballistics so you're not zipping .22 caliber holes through unarmored / drugged-up opfor.

What im saying in a civilian context is that even if i had access to 855a1 id still go with tmks. Up close face shoot. Out far also face shoot but tmks will make it easier. If you have to shoot a plate you better atleast have dominated the enemy with suppression and maneuver first. I fucking swear i never heard of people talking about 855a1 before my little brother and his friends played tarkov.

M855A1 destroys barrels faster than regular 5.56 ammo, not sure if a lot of people know this. If you stock up on M855A1 buy good barrels. Also this round is still a 2-3 MOA round. In my opinion Gold dot or 77gr ammo is a better "general purpose" to stock up for general preparedness

If you can aim around the plate, do so. The average joe though ain't that good especially under pressure. They will aim center mass and that's where the plate is. Good plates are robust enough that TMKs won't count. They will ignore the hits. M855A1 will.
For what it's worth, and as one example, the Buffalo shooting would have been stopped if the security guard had an AR with M855A1. The shooter's RMA 1092 G1s were not up for that threat. It also would have been stopped if the security guard aimed around the plate. He had a handgun and his training made him default to center mass. An AR with TMKs wouldn't have helped him. A1 would have. Just one example of many. CONUS is armor rich. OCONUS against China will be even richer.
>>I fuckin swear
You are now aware Liberty Ammunition made M855A1 analogues in all calibers up to .338 Lapua, including tungsten 110gr 5.56 subsonic AP and 360gr .338LM, and even an M855A2. See their website from 2007-2013 on the wayback machine.

Jesus fuck this is the 3rd time im trying to type this out. Virtually all of the action i saw was at one roadblock. It was mostly boring as fuck but sometimes it was pretty intense. Once we started getting mortared and while that was happening we began taking pkm fire from one flank and then they rushed us with 2 vbieds. Shit like that happened occasionally but that was the most intense event. One time we successfully hunted a mortar team which was cool. Hadji never wanted to play at night. Only funny shit that happened to me in the military was in bootcamp or fucking with locals or seeing creative ways to try to get drunk.

Shoot them with m2s, 240s, i shot them with the 249 with m995, i think we hit some with mortars. Shit like be meyers dazzlers didnt work for fuck. There were bradleys up the road but if they really hit us hard i guess we woulda been kinda fucked. Ive posted pictures (not in this general) before but im currently phone posting in a hotel for work. In the next couple minutes im gonna meet a coworker for a drink at the hotel bar and head to sleep after. Honestly, i never really felt scared while shit was popping off. Really only felt dread after shit was over and the adrenaline dumped id get kinda depressed and worried if any boys got hit. Other than a few minor accidents and someone getting grazed by pkm harassing fire we came out unscathed. After my deployment ended i the roadblock was quickly handed off to iraqi police. Only shitty thing was how young some of the enemy fighters were but they were fucking stupid for fucking with us. When i saw enemy dead 80 percent of the time it seemed like older dudes but who fucking knows, sometimes a 30 year old over there looks 80 and other times they look 18. That was my only deployment overseas and i never really saw any of the funny shit or things that compare to some of the stories posted here. I think because we were somewhat regularly seeing some action people took their jobs seriously and were pretty wired in. Even the dumbest motherfuckers got their shit together quick.

I respect a2 but from my experience from how he talks about civilians not understanding how to employ a mg i think thats where he looses cred. Its not fucking rocket science. /rant

Addressing this separately because it's important. Civie-focused armor has been around since the mid-90s. Aside from some plates delaminating and early PE plates degrading above 180 F, armor doesn't go bad. In four months alone (8/24 to 12/24), Highcom's one dealer of many, tacticalshit, sold more than eight thousand 4SAS4s. Highcom has at least five dealers.
There are likely hundreds of thousands of plates in private circulation. It's mainstream enough that you should prep for it.
>>64088359
Still stops either of those rounds and the truck bed liner will hold for a shot or two. M193 at 3,250 will ice them. $50 is typical historic steel plate price. Tacscorp, AR500, predator on sale. They're all ass but that's what fudd people are rolling. Armor's common, but it's at a wide range of quality levels.

The dazzlers, were they GLARE MOUTs or something like the GLIS? 100mW is weak by dazzler standards and might be why they were shit. Later models (MOUT PLUS / LA-12 GLIS) were 200mW. Eventually 250mW with the OIS.

That Chinese white label is FINE. It will absolutely function exactly as needed for 99% of use cases for the average civilian. You're not going to hang onto your front plate longer than a couple hits anyway, why spend $800 on it? If all he'll did break out, the likelihood that you'll be fighting an actual military is about zero and the roaming gangs of niggers are shooting PSA's with 7" barrels that tumble like a mother fucker.

Okay serious mode. XSAPIs were problematic at first because they had to switch to Silicon Carbide from B4C as used in the ESAPIs to stop M995 / M993 due to boron carbide amorphization. Weight went to 6.5lb for a size medium, which coupled with required soft armor means everyone is running around with Hesco 4401-tier weight to stop 3x M993 @ 3,050ft/s, which proxies for literally no ex-soviet threat.

The M855A1 was specifically made to address the M855 failures after passing barriers.
If push comes to shove even if the steel penetrator fucks off to do its own thing the copper plug stays on mission and carves a hole in the fucker.

>we did the whole "the harder metal little penetrator means it'll work fine through barriers" thing with m855. I'm not buying that a1 is better at that specific task
Then you're kind of retarded? The A1 steel is indeed harder but M855 had troubles because hits at an angle caused the steel to pinch the copper jacket against the barrier which caused the performance to be inconsistent as fuck because the bullet was already trying to come apart before it even passed the intermediate target. The A1 hits tip first which increases consistency.
You also have the copper base plug which doesn't get turned into confetti like lead.

Utter retardation. Used with JHPs and a chamber that allows the use of hotter loads without negative effects it's pretty good for hunting or to do security.

6.8 is better against armor than 5.56 but not enough to justify the swap

the dual power RMRs are kinda cool and very clear if you dont mind them being spotty in the dark

Still a parabola lol

5.56 doesn't have any recoil lmao

Completely irrelevant, why don't we switch to 5.7 for ultimate energy efficiency per pound of ammo carried
>SAAMI spec for chamber was submitted with errors in the drawing not once but TWICE which limited performance due to overpressure concerns
6.8's "limited performance" is still superior to 556 performance.

Was there even any testing of steel core 6.8 SPC?

Have fun running out of ammo first, or showing up to the fight already fatigued

More room for error in range estimation and lead
>5.56 doesn't have any recoil lmao
Which means increased hit rate. You have less ammo and miss more. Guess how the fight will end.
>Completely irrelevant, why don't we switch to 5.7
People really think they're smart when they mention 5.7 or .380 ACP vs 9mm.
Higher cost for no benefit. The lower recoil of 5.7 is meaningless in terms of increasing hit rate, it has worse trajectory and flat out worse performance on any given metric. Stuff like 5.56 and 5.45 exist in a goldilocks zone where any attempt to go lighter gives you a shit caliber that can't do real rifle performance, and trying to go any heavier gives you recoil and weight without the performance increase to justify the drawbacks.
If you wanted to make a switch then you'd want something like 5.56 FABRL which is a M193 analogue with lower weight, lower chamber pressure and lower recoil. It just would fail in many aspects past 300 yards, and fail stuff like the helmet penetration test. But at least you get rifle performance out of an anemic load via optimized efficiency. Instead of doing stupid shit like suggesting 5.7 or .22 WMR for an infantry caliber.
>6.8's "limited performance" is still superior to 556 performance
Yet SOCOM saw no advantage in fielding it. Funny how in Afghanistan the fat slower round was not seen as an advantage and the guys who could get contracts to make more 6.8 SPC just replaced it by the weaker 5.56.
At least full power 6.8 with correct chamber and rifling that minimized contact area could be tuned to get back velocity and maximize efficiency with low drag bullets. Using heavy for caliber lead core bullets negates the advantage of SCHV. Congrats, you reinvented 7.62x39 but shittier.
