It's a min/max thing. Compact, cheap, lightweight, but it is going to have shitty ballistics since 5.56mm is optimized for longer barrels.

I built a budget 9" 300blk braced pistol, which is a pretty good solution but the ammunition is much more expensive unless you reload. It is possible to argue in circles for eternity about which AR setup is best, so frogspammer isn't exactly wrong but I'll take my 20" A1 clone over an 11.5" for most applications.

It matters a lot, especially with 5.56 which is designed around a 20". More complete powder burn, less muzzle flash, higher velocity, more range at which the projectiles fragment reliably, longer accurate range overall.

You can get some acceptable performance out of an 11.5" with boutique ammunition, but you are going to be paying a fortune for it. Running that with standard M855 or M193 is going to result in a lot of random ice picking beyond about 100yd. Of course that limited range can be worth it for for the shorter/lighter rifle as long as you are only going to be fighting within short range anyway, but that does gimp you a bit if you need to reach a little further.

NTA, but to add on to what you said, even boutique ammo, while performing decently in 11.5" ARs, performs even better in a 20" AR. Plus, you can make a 20" rifle penetrate certain body armor based on what ammo you choose but an 11.5" carbine won't be able to penetrate that same body armor no matter what ammo it uses.

I agree, my original plan was basically your rifle, pencil barrel a1/c7 upper with A2 furniture, black anodized receiver, but when I actually had it all together it looked odd so I went period correct. It wasn't vibing with me

Thx for the input. I always thought that 30 rd mags looked a bit bulky in an A1 while 20 rd mags looked too small in an A2.

I'm not wrong though.

77gr is a lot more expensive than 55 or 62gr, and while HD range could be 5-25yd where M193 would be fine, it stands to reason that if you want it to be a rifle that can do rifle things beyond just HD distance then you would want it to be effective beyond just 100yd. If the AR is strictly for HD that's one thing, but if it is supposed to do everything you may want an AR to do you'll probably need a longer barrel than 11.5".

Also the situation is an exact 180 for the average American. ARs, AR parts, ammo, etc. are common as shit. AKs are relatively rarer.
