>A5 length buffer
Yes
>18"
You've already committed to not having a carbine. Just deal with the extra 2 inches of a 20" for better ballistics.
>mid-length
why the hell would you intentionally choose a shorter gas system length when both 18" and 20" are long enough for rifle length gas
>and monolithic upper receiver
Not a substantial enough improvement to eat the cost. A hypothetical extended URG-I for an M16A5/C7A3 would deliver like 90%+ of the functionality while being substantially cheaper (at least based on the costs I've seen for both).

It would be massively cheaper. Monolithic uppers are made as a forging. So the entire rail would be part of the forging. Just one huge block of aluminum, that then needs machined down into handguard. It's very expensive, time consuming, and provides minimal benefit. And of course it's gonna weigh a fuckload, about the same as a full length quad rail would, if you opt for mlok on your monolithic.

The optic and handguard could be updated, but conceptually the rifle length barrel with an adjustable LOP stock is the best design for a general issue service rifle yes.

Clearing a weapon before doing something like that, especially in training is common practice, hell they might have never even loaded in the first place because its training
>main pack
They float if you kit is packed in dry bags, which they should be
>clearly shallow
You have no way of telling that.
Either way it's all distracting from the point that you can't put the safety on an AR 15 pattern rifle like this unless the hammer is cocked.

monolithic uppers are complete snake oil retardation. Euros love this kind of shit for some reason. The US Army/USMC are completely fine with the zero retention of the M4/M5 RAS system, which is not free floated at all. There was never any need for perfect zero retention on your LAM or whatever other hypothetical devices soldiers would be putting on their rails, it's just not that serious if the thing moves 2 moa under recoil.

Perfect zero retention was one possible downside of the M4 and companies were coming with all kinds of solutions to keep in their pocket for future contracts to soak up GWOT pentagon funding, in the end the RIS II won and then the Mk14, and there's really no reason to ever look at monolithic and their retarded barrel nut designs again (looking at you colt 6940)

The C7A2 is basically perfect if it had a picatinny spec upper rail and they ditched the stupid pokey sling end plate and large latch charging handle. It has rails where they are actually needed and nowhere else. What nobody wants to admit is plastic A2 handguards actually do a phenomenal job of keeping your hand insulated from the heat of the barrel, they're easy to rip off when it's time to clean the rifle, you can bang them on shit and not care because they're $16 to replace

I think in many ways it is a better version of what the M16A4 should have been. Kept the full auto, gave it a collapsing stock in an era with more body armor, no fucked up A2 barrel profile.
I'm not entirely sold on adding a Picatinny section to the FSB instead of some kind of rail solution for the handguards, but OTOH clamshells are comfy and I'm sure reduced forward weight.
The C7 charging handles are a fucking insane design though. I appreciate being ambi friendly but there are better ways.
The 20 inch barrel is longer than most people these days prefer, but that's at more recent trend for a default service AR so I don't hold it against the C7

Or there might not be because its unloaded, and you can check the hammer isn't down by trying to put the safety on but you can't, so even if there was somehow a round in the chamber and the hammer was up it wouldn't fucking matter because the rifle won't fire no matter how many times you pull the trigger.

No they don't. You keep gaining velocity out of longer barrels. You lose hardly any from shorter barrels. 20" is entirely an arbitrary length. The only reason the M16 had a 20" barrel is because the AR-10 did.

It's not what 5.56 was designed for. 5.56 as we know it was designed by the Belgians. The rifle they purpose built to fire it didn't have a 20" barrel.

5.56 as we know it was designed by Remington for Eugene Stoner to be used in the AR-15. It's a lengthened .222 Remington. 5.56x45 NATO is exactly the same cartridge with the same dimensions and same pressure, it's just a slightly different chamber spec (which is not a part of the cartridge).

>No it's not.
The quoted pressures are different because of different testing methodologies (NATO EPVAT vs American piezo), but they're actually the same pressure in the chamber. The reason you see people say that 5.56 is unsafe in a .223 chamber is because the .223 chamber is tighter and therefore a load that generates 55,000 PSI piezo in a NATO chamber might generate 70,000 PSI piezo in a Remington chamber. In practice I've never heard of this ever actually causing a problem, it's fuddlore as far as I'm concerned.

I am genuinely curious what institution or unit you come from that taught you "the right way".
I couldn't imagine working somewhere that trusted its soldiers so little for something so simple like being responsible for the safety of their personal tools.

>A cartridge isn't just a brass case. Do you know that?
A chamber is not a cartridge.

>Because they're different.
If you measured 5.56 in a NATO chamber and .223 in a Remington chamber with the same methodology, you'd get the same result.

Correct. And the powder load is part of the cartridge.

The powder charge varies with every loading, are you saying that M855 is a different cartridge from M855A1?

Well yes, naturally it is. They are a different 'cartridge'.

So in that sense the "5.56 NATO cartridge" doesn't even exist, there's just M855, M855A1, Mk.318, etc. So what are we going to call the shared dimensions that allow all of those various cartridges to interchange in the same weapons?

I was in during the gwot surge, so on field exercises if we could get ammo we were carrying condition 1 and condition 3 if not
cax was almost entirely live fire aside from an initial dry run, no ammo and condition 3 and then it was burning powder until you had a headache from all the goddamn shooting
everything we did was to make it as close as possible to a deployment so guys wouldn't build bad habits or do stupid shit once we were in country
I wasn't even infantry, I was one of many even more expendable pogs with no mission so we were set up for convoys or driving around looking for bombs and ambushes on route clearance

I'm in the Bong military, our manual of arms for the Sharpshooter rifle states you let the bolt go forward and fire off the action to clear the rifle, the safety is left off since you can't put it back on after that. If you want to know the rifle is ready and able to fire you test the fire selector to see if it goes on safe or not.
Firing the action on an early chamber as part of an unload/make safe for the L85 is part of the drill as well.

It's literally part of the unload and make safe drills.

416 is the best variant but realistically they're all so close and all good designs. If you really want to get into it, the best variants are custom civilian ARs minus the lack of a giggle switch.

I'm much more concerned about the fact she's still wearing her ring than any of the bullshit about the selector. It's got a fucking setting and a diamond on it too.
RIP finger, and RIP I mean ripped off.
