When the US air force still had their own space program they invented this concept for combat on the moon.

I imagine the source of these being some gun enthusiast mad over increasing calibers and size of revolvers.

> These drawings are two of several sent to Robert Abels by Steven Ickes over the course of several years. The were originally published in Abels' 1950 book Early American Firearms. They were also published in a chapter called "Fancy Free" in Lewis Winant's book Firearms Curiosa from 1955. They are totally imaginary (surprise, surprise!) and, interestingly, not too wild compared to some of the real guns that Winant reports.

> The amusing thing (other than the concepts) was that Ickes named one of his creations "Python" at least five years (and probably more) before Colt produced the first Python, the first snake-named Colt. Probably coincidental, but it makes you think.

VFGs can be useful for fighting muzzle climb on submachine guns but they are fucking retarded for hard recoiling handguns. Reaching the front grip with your off hand means your main arm must have its elbow bent quite a bit....and THAT is a very bad thing.
I know from experience. I had to drive my friend to the hospital to get stitches in his face after he tried that with the gun in picrel. Dude tried to put his support hand under the foreend instead of backing up his main hand on the grip. It recoiled straight back, scope smacked him between the eyes, smashed his safety glasses and gave him a bad cut that looked like a 3rd eyebrow right in the middle of his forehead. 15 stitches.

Speaking of foregrips on handguns.

Since we are talking about space guns - here's an actual space gun that has been into space.

Yeah, that's just bizarre. I wonder how it works, there's no obvious bolt handle so the trigger must somehow do double-duty?
Anonymous No.64112037 [Report] >>64112069

simply putting your hand under the handguard does nothing for recoil control and that's not how vertical grips work. If he has used an actual vertical grip he probably wouldn't have needed a trip to the hospital.

>simply putting your hand under the handguard does nothing for recoil control
Yes. But you're overlooking the most important factor, which is the bend angle of your elbows. Even if the gun had a proper VFG actually holding it in such a way you could look down the sights while keeping either arm straight enough to take hard recoil is very difficult. Now firing it from the hip with a front grip? That would certainly help.

Why do people think buckshot is actually good for that?

>>don't you know they did it in Vietnam? They had 40mm buckshot, gave shotguns to the Vietnamese, etc.
Yeah. The 40mm buckshot turned out to be terrible so they stopped issuing it, and the only reason they gave shotguns to the South Vietnamese was because they didn't trust them with anything better.

That was Russ Hamm down in Florida iirc. Pretty clever idea actually, but probably a bit unsafe for the average user. The guys that used to run these said that you could set a shag carpet on fire with one. When they were eventually banned from competition, it was because of the fire hazard, not radiation concerns.

I wonder if a less hazardous substitute exists.

That was strictly for shooting bears (or superstitious peasants) on return to earth, it would not have functioned well in space. For use IN space the Soviets came up with the laser revolver. It used cartridges that contained a single use flashbulb and capacitor that pumped a ruby rod laser.

I think you're supposed to cradle the grip with your right hand, and reach up to pull the trigger in a way that doesn't get in the way of the trigger/bolt reciprocating. Probably quite awkward.
Anonymous No.64114860 [Report] >>64116173

I suspect it works like the switch on the Mondragón rifle. The trigger is also the bolt handle and you hold down the trigger then rack it back and forth to rapidly fire off the entire magazine.
