The Antuco Tragedy took place in May 2005 when Major Cereceda of the Chilean Army ordered a company in training to perform a long march between two mountain shelters in temperatures of minus 35 degrees Celsius. The conscripts were not equipped with any winter gear and when they started dying the officers and subofficers ran away. Only the kitchen Sargeant stayed behind to help and died. One conscript survived. The major was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
