Are monolithic uppers a meme? It's a shame a few cool designs like the Colt 901 series and Remington RGP died due to the LMT patent + shitty company management. Do you think there will be a resurgence once the LMT patent expires next year?

Unless you are in an abusive relationship with your AR and it just can't stop burning dinner, a properly fit handguard simply isn't going to shift even fractions of a millimeter over its lifetime. And even if it does, just tighten it a bit?

its a benefit and better starting base but not a necessity
Anonymous No.64228661 [Report]
I don't think they're a total meme, but they are more of a sidegrade. Considering the success the relative C8 and ARAD have seen outside the US, i would expect them to gradually become a major thing once other manufacturers can make them domestically. Wont happen overnight, you'll need a few years of competition where the best barrel locking system gets decided, but after that monolithic PSAs and windhams will probably be a common sight at gun stores.

I feel like if you have to ask, they probably aren’t that different from regular uppers

Unnecessary unless shooting longer distance under NV or a thermal clip-on is a big concern. I have an LMT and use it for both those things.

they're a direct upgrade, but thanks to LMJew, theres been barely any development on it among the AR platform
maybe it'll get a resurgence in the next few years, but i wouldn't be surprised if LMT singlehandedly killed all interest in it, fuck LMT

I have an LMT MRP, two LWRC M6-IC G's, and a Colt 6945. My roommate has the same but also two 6940s and two 6940-P's
We also have another dozen ARs from fixed carry handle A1s and colt carbines to totally custom bash together free float stuff

There is zero appreciable difference for daily fucking around. But there's a level of "confidence" that the Colt 6940s give that I think has value.
The LWRCs are the absolute best beyond 600yds though, they're just way more accurate. My roommates LaRue is the only one on par.

The patent is up next july, there's at least one company already tooling up.
I want a Mega Arms and a Colt Canada monolithic (pic related)

Cons
Proprietary barrels

Pros
You get to pretty much forget that checking your handguard screws is a thing. I built a new upper recently after living with my LMT for a while and I was staring at them shits like what was these fo again gah daym.

I'm not really seeing them even mentioned anymore lately, so that should give you a good answer. Pretty much a mid-2010s fad.

They’re not a meme, but they’re not necessarily the absolute pinnacle of AR upper receiver design either, in my opinion. There’s a downside to having the entire length of the rail be a continuous piece which is one continuous part including the upper receiver. Any damage to the rail is essentially unrepairable. Monolithic mlok just doesn’t make huge sense to me.

The designs like LWRC, Seekins, Larue, and others, where the hand guard is still a separate piece, yet not relying on the barrel nut for attachment, are solving the same “problems” as a full monolith but with less of the drawbacks.

SPBP
Contiguous upper rail platform is absolutely a benefit.
Conversely, machine time cost aside, there are no detractions to having a monolithic upper rail so long as design is sound and assembly/maintenance is considered in advance.
I assume they absolutely will make a comeback.
Aero actually started out making the C.O.P. uppers (picrelated) waaaaay back in the day, and they even still have the listing on their website, although it's obviously perpetually out of stock (https://www.aeroprecisionusa.com/cop-c4-carbine-length-upper-receiver-kit-black).
I can just about guarantee the second LMT's patent runs out, they come back into stock.

Those went unavailable because LMT wanted some absolutely bat shit insane 30% royalty or something.
LMT are a bunch of litigious kikes that can't drill a straight hole and build ARs with dremels.

Fucking irritates me a ton.
I was going to do my second AR upper build with one, but at the time I was in my first real job and made absolute dog shit wages, so I had to save up over the course of a few weeks or months or whatever (so long ago I can't even remember how much time I needed to save up).
By the time I had enough to spare they were impossible to find.
No idea why I didn't just eventually go with one of the other manufacturers, but I never did. It might have had something to do with a lot of them pushing keymod which I was not a fan of.

Monolith for the price point is a steal. One less parts point of failure the better.

>LWRC M6-IC

The round LWRC handguard with the ten screws looks so good, same with the continuous pic rail on the top. I can't go back to handguards that don't line up with the receiver and useless flat parts on the pic rail.

For the most part, yes they are. For specific configurations and use cases they make some sense, but if you aren't in that niche, it's just a waste of money. Hell, you can mount your optic further forward even with old school bullshit plastic handguards if you use a cantilever mount.
