Are you supposed to heat up your chow while in the field? Everyone I know just eats them cold. Nobody uses the heater.

Yes

Here's a pro tip relevant to the army as well as civilian life
Hot food feels more filling than cold food, so if you're trying to fill up under food constraints like rationing or waiting for payday to go to the store. don't just eat stuff as is, warm them up.

It's good to have the option to heat them up when you want to and have the time
Hot food provides a smidge more calories

Why would heating a food up increase the calories? Its still the same amount in the pouch
Anonymous No.64254233 [Report] >>64254630 >>64261803
Dont fucking heat the food up it makes it toxic. They wrap that shit in plastic and when you cook it you release teflon all over the food.

Basic thermodynamics
Your body will expend heat energy regulating ie heating cold ingested food to your internal body temperature
In contrast, hot food means your body expends fewer calories maintaining your internal body temperature. It can use some of the heat from that hot food you ate instead and burn less calories that way.
Therefore the net gain to your body from hot food is more than cold food

It's not going to matter in any other situation,, but this is similar to why you don't dunk a Sonic Slush into a hypothermia patient and give them warm liquids instead

Well yeah heh so as I said, it's probably not gonna matter that much unless you're hypothermic.

But i guess that it's probably a big reason why people psychologically feel better eating hot food or drinking warm soup or having a brew.
Either the additional heat does have significant physiological impact (i can't be arsed but a simple calorie difference calculation would answer this), or it might be psychological, or hormonal.
You burn only 3 calories every 2 minutes just by existing. Body temperatures can impact the happy hormones (serotonin?) and the anxiety hormones (cortisol?). It's not impossible that this "minute" difference can have an immediate physiological and mood effect.

When I was in the field, I wouldn't care enough to heat it, the FRHs are too slow, and IMO don't heat reliably enough. On the rare occasion I wanted a hot MRE, I would just use my jet boil and boil it.

The body also can regulate it's internal heat through vasodilatation/vasoconstriction, you dilating tranny/cockconstrictor.
Cold food->lower internal temperature->vasoconstriction
Hot food->higher internal temperature->vasodilatation+sweating
You have this heat pool the body can juggle with, you testicle juggling clown.

tl;dr you are partially correct, but also a tranny.

This is why cooks should be a frontline MOS just like medics. Food plays a huge part in keeping morale up. Every platoon should have one field cook. Bonus, then we can have real /ck/ memes about cooks vs civvies.

Stupid shit had a tendency to happen when I left my M2 to do anything, so I started eating as fast as possible so I could get back to it and not have my dingdong driver up there instead of me. I rarely bothered to heat MREs.

Basic chemistry, reactions happen better when hot. Otherwise your body has to work to provide the heat.
Also a tip for getting over a cold. Keep yourself warm, fevers are your body fighting off the infection.

Heaters emptied into a large plastic soda bottle part full of water then shaken and quickly capped yield droll booms, especially tossed into a crew van full of sleeping maintainers.

I rarely heated mine either, as they'll make a turd either way and they don't bother my digestion a bit.

Just warm it up on your bare butt cheeks under your standard issue clothes.
Anonymous No.64261096 [Report]
I only heated them up when it was kinda cold and I wanted something warm, which was probably 5% of the time. They don't taste any better warm. I particularly liked the cold santa fe rice, chili mac, chicken pesto pasta and a couple others. You can heat the fake cheese and peanut butter up passively just laying them on top of the main meal.

The real thing is we never carried full MREs around, we stripped them heavily and the heater just made no sense to keep. I wonder if hundreds of those things end up in a landfill and heating up simultaneously after a Marine field op when it rains

Anything "flushable" is going to be designed to dissolve, it usually only causes problems when it's wadded tightly enough that inside layers don't get exposed to water in the pipe.

Eurocuck here, when I was a conscript they told us that it was VERY IMPORTANT to heat up the food with our little portable field kitchen, but when we were out on field exercises it inevitably went like this
>OK TIME TO EAT YOU'VE GOT 10 MINUTES

The reason why that will never happen is because nobody wants to deal with food logistics in the field beyond MREs. In fact that's really why MRE's were developed to begin with, to get rid of field cooks.

For infantry-type operations, you need to field strip issued MREs to only the high calorie portions and none of the junk, save for some shit tickets and salt. Reason being, some faggot ass 1st lt has mandated 15 lbs of superfluous bullshit cause he heard an anecdote in a grifter podcast a week ago and now you don't have the space or weight to spare.
