An anon once had a theory that people with face saving cultures are ever so slightly unevolved and it's basically the way primitive tribes are organized and maintain relationships with their neighbors - boasting, symbolic acts, and shows of honor and status.
And that the west lost this because all of the people like that eventually got killed or got themselves killed, and the people who operated on what others had actually done and were unable to comprehend the value in face saving behavior were more successful due to being more effective overall, which is what organized society prefers. Russia and china are recently elevated pre-industrial societies that communism forced to advance at a faster pace than their population could adapt to.
The theory does have credence. Major personality traits are genetic, and most genes that set races apart actually affect the nervous system and gut. If humans mutate at the same rate as dogs generation to generation, modern westerners are as different from the russians and chinese as border collies (proper dogs) are from huskies (friendly wolves).
