Is baiting deer cheating? I know it's contraversial

it depends an what you want. do you want sport or meat?

I'm becoming increasingly confident that I could bag a deer in my front yard with a knife and nobody would ever know.

They're incredibly complacent by me. They'll let people get within arm's reach no problem. I imagine that with some corn in one hand and a 7" fixed blade in the other, I could get one in the jugular and it wouldn't be able to make it more than a few yards from my property before collapsing.

More like important when targeting specific deer or if a particular area has much more deer than the land can handle. Also, bait helps with headshots which puts food on the table.

doesn't matter, killing them by just about any method is more humane than the kind of retarded shit they do to themselves in the wild. the state built an overpass on a relatives land a few years ago and throughout the building process deer kept jumping/falling off it and breaking their legs, happened like 10 times. couldn't put them down obviously, so he just had to let them writhe around and scream until they expired on their own.

there's areas of the world where you reasonably can't kill without it, and there's places where you can't legally bait/feed deer. I'm in a location where it's not hard to find deer without bait so I don't use it, but I recognize that it's the meta for some areas

If you hunt for food, bait just saves you time. Same if you hunt because you just like shooting living things or want a trophy for your wall. But if you hunt because you like the outdoors, the challenge of finding wild game, the actual act of hunting, then yeah it's cheating. You're cheating yourself out of the experience.

They don't even fight because the deer pussy is so plentiful. Once I went out to my truck and thought what I was a dog on top of a fence trying to get a bird in a tree. Turns out out is wasn't a dog, but a giant fucking bobcat. I didn't figure this out until I was less than 10' away from it.
