Yak-130 is best all around jet.

China bangs these out for 10-15 mil and it can carry a missile that will bag an F-35 and is almost as fast, and there are carrier capable versions flying off Chinese carriers.

Its what the Pentagon shoulda forced everyone to standardize on for trainer and 2nd string jet.

They need lots of trainers for their other jets. Plus always good to have 2nd stringers with low overhead for lite strike, radar picket, airbase point defense, lite tanker, etc.

Next USN trainer wont even be able to do carrier landings. First time a co-ed DEI girl boss does a carrier landing it will be in F-18 or F-35, on a real front line carrier, since they scrapped old training non-nuke carriers. What could go wrong? :)

Lol, even the basic training FT version of the M-346 is -all around- more capable than even this latest mockup that will never fly.
The light attack version ordered by Austria will have an actual AESA radar instead of the "trust us we'll build it in the future! BRLS one".
Unlike the Yak, the M-346 doesn't have to lose 2 hardpoints just to have chaff and flares and can integrate internal and external EW pods.
The Yak-130 is basically 90% the effort of italian engineer and the russians still managed to never improve it from where we left off after the dissolution of the partnership to the point that countries like Turkmenistan and Nigeria who were supposed by contract to be able to buy only the Yak, decided to still buy the M-346FA even in its cucked version for non NATO customers

The difference is that was chosen because systems like magic carpet have become so advanced that they can easily train someone this way. China can only copy the exterior feature of a western system like a cargo cult. I would be surprised if even your new tailless 3rd gen fighters even have a FBW system.

The 346 can use AGM-65s, APKWS rockets, S and MRAAMS, anti ship MK-2 missiles, brimstone, most GBUs, JDAMs, some JSOWs and glide kits etc. Not to mention the M-346 can carry more ordnance, is faster, has a much better T/W ratio, can do air refueling unlike the yak, has better survivability and manouverability (both at sea level and at altitude). There is not a single comparison where the Yak beats the 346 beside unit cost.

sort of. there's a recent documentary series on naval advanced flight training ("Top Guns"), and it shows pilots doing landings on land, but they have a system where you have to maintain a certain angle and speed or else you fail. it looked pretty hard to do.

funny thing is the pilot who graduated at the top of the class in that series was a small hippy former yoga teacher. she aced every criteria, including defensive and offensive dogfighting.
