They're booby traps, meant to be detonated with a radio signal in areas the enemy has taken from you, usually buildings. They're not timed because you can't always be sure when the enemy actually begins inhabiting the building.

Why would the Soviet Union use mines at the end of the war? Mines are only good to when you're losing ground or the battle lines are static. In the continuation of the war, Germany was the one who should have been using mines.

It's entertaining, yes, and has great scenes and high production value, and certainly covers the key points of the larger battle(s), where individuals aren't so meaningful. However, one shouldn't approach it conventionally, expecting a plot or coherence, but rather treat it like a compilation of combat scenes. In a sense, more like a documentary.
