is the buck 119 still a good knife? i know they were good in the day but i dont know if theyre shit now, i do not trust youtube shills. also is the 120 actually worth it compared to the 119?

I don't own a 119 but have several Bucks and the quality isn't like it used to be. You can probably do much better in this market if you're willing to spend a little extra on a fixed blade.

I just like how full tang buck knives look, i dont give a shit about practicality or optimizing knife loadouts. Even a shitty $10 walmart buck knife mogs every other sort of knife

The very tip is a bit brittle and can snap, but it's otherwise a good knife.

On a side note, I've seen about 3 separate incels sporting the 119 on their hip in just the last two weeks alone. It seems like it's a pretty poplular option for the socially marginalized males in society.

>grip is slippery and poorly shaped for any actual use
>crossguard is necessary because of the terrible handle but impedes all use besides stabbing a motherfucker
idk I don't think it was ever good, people just like the way it looks. They have better steel options now which is cool. If you like it, they certainly haven't made the knife worse over time, it was always quite useless.

It needs at least hatching or something, and to be thinner by like a half mm in every direction. You could probably modify it pretty easily because it's one strength is the handle is a solid brick of delrin. Steel fitting wouldn't hurt either but would fuck up it's balance in the sheath like you see on the brass version which is about an inch into the handle (which is ironically great for knife fighting)

The blade steel was the hot new thing when Boomers were young. The Buck was stainless, yet it held and edge better and sharpened more easily than most. However, in the decades that have passed we have much better steels now, there's no reason to settle for it.

And yeah, I agree 100% about the handle. It has vintage looks, which I think go back to knives from Sheffield which Buck copied, but it's not very practical.

It depends a lot on where you are. When I lived near a big city I hardly ever saw it unless it was overweight biker types. Now, when I live in a smaller more rural town? Very common. If you go to the feed store (farm supply) or a hardware store then probably 80% of the men and even some of the ladies will be open-carrying a fixed blade.

Idk, used my martin made in Belgium ww2 machete to hack away overgrown blackberry bushes to recapture my family's garden today rests back in it's sheath on my alice gear, my razor sharp Winchester bowie sits in it's shitty nylon holster, my cold steel tanto is somewhere in my closet, But my CRKT CEO is always in my pocket, I love my pointy little stabby bastard

I have one. It came out of the package scary-sharp and has a dogshit vinyl sheath. It would certainly serve well as a cheap shank for nogunz people. I doubt I'll ever use it because I already have a beater Mora that is a more practical field knife.

I have a 117. A nice thing about the sheath is how it holds the knife in place. If you wriggle it, the edge will touch the sheath at one point along the length of the edge probably, but it generally keeps the edge from dulling on the sheath by how the retention strap wraps around the handle, keeping it in place. But it's high-on-the-hip boomer style.

Can absolutely recommend this little fucker. Super slim and easy to carry around unobtrusively. Not expensive at all and fairly good quality construction. Handle is fairly solid and grippy for how thin it is and is sturdy enough to pop bottle caps off. If you need a dead serious work knife or something larger Morakniv is also super cheap and easy to sharpen and use. You can buy them blade only as well if you want to make your own handle to fit.

I'm not a knife nerd but there's charts of metal qualities for knives. If you get a reputable brand name just shop for the steel you like so you can avoid cross-checking 10,000 forum opinions and end up with an inferior steel for more money. The charts in the link was some autistic guys measuring cutting rope over time, hand sharpening, destructive prying, and checking for corrosion over years on different metals.

https://www.bladehq.com/blog/knife-steel-guide

As a baseline, I shop knives 60-200$, look at the shape and then look at the steel. I compare the random steel against the three most commonly used work knife steels.
>1095 steel
Flexible springy steel that's very tough and easy to sharpen. It's for bushcraft knives where you need it not to fracture and can field sharpen. It does not hold an edge super well.
>440C steel
Classic hunting knife steel. Good for its time. Inferior to modern super steels but very cheap now.
>S30V steel
The first common super steel optimized for hunting knives through I think Cabelas. There's better now but it will stay sharp through an entire deer and they're fairly cheap. If you can afford better that's great if not it's still the best you'll ever need.

I've gotten several guys into hunting and updated my own equipment following this and through experience I can verify the different metals handle exactly how the chart says. With a hunting knives, I've found carrying two and no sharpener to be optimal but Im also carving up multiple game animals over several days. On 4.5" medium spine drop point and one 3" skinning style. The bigger tougher steel makes the entry cuts into the fur and prys around the bone while the harder steel smaller knife is for meat and cutting the hide back around the head for shouldering the animal. Sharpen during down time.

1095 is not tough, it's among the least tough steels used to make knives. It is cheap and easy to sharpen though

It's just a knife, it really doesn't matter that much

It's an old design, the only real downsides is it's heavy and not as tough as something simpler/lighter. It's still a big knife that'll cut.

If you need something to use as a prybar look elsewhere, otherwise sure it's fine. I swear most people would probably be ok if they brought a kitchen knife out into the woods.

I have one and I like it. Decent all around and has stayed sharp through two deer and a dozen plus rabbits.

i have both, i just keep the 119 in my car. proved handy when some fuckin dumb ass spic came up to my window at a red light chimping out last year, fucking faggot wetback immediately folded like a pussy and then started filming me with his phone like a snitch. typical mexican. the 120 is far superior, the 119 just lacks the same intimidation factor.
