Did the Russian Spetsnaz ever fight the IRA?

No, and I'm pretty sure the Soviets gave the IRA weapons during the troubles.

They're just overpriced GI Joes. I miss Ultimate Soldier. They did a bunch of historically accurate kits for pretty reasonable prices.

Haven't seen that show in ages, not since I was in middle school. I remember the Taliban vs. IRA and the Green Beret vs. Spetsnaz being hype.

On that note, why is(are?) The Troubles never characterized as a Cold War conflict? They ended in the 90s, for God's sake.

This, the USSR would back any rebellion in the west and funded the IRA but never got directly involved.
Sometimes bad actors do good deeds by geopolitical chance.

Because the IRA was founded 3 years before the USSR existed and had fought under other names for decades before that.

It's just an evolution of an old and near continuous conflict with semi-coherent political goals. It certainly happened during that period, but side from being used a vehicle for major players, had little to do with the aims and goals of those players. Ultimately, ending the paramilitary stage of conflict was a net positive for Britain, but only due to uncharacteristic shifts in both British and Irish sympathies, so it's hard to say if who gained what if it was directed by the US/USSR

The Troubles didn't properly kick off until the late 60s.

You could say the same about any number of post-colonial wars, yet academics have no quarrels sometimes describing them as Cold War conflicts.

Let me be clear, I am not saying that the Troubles happened just because of the Cold War. Conflict in Northern Ireland was in all likelihood inevitable in the 20th century. I am just saying that it is clear that The Troubles was shaped by the wider Cold War, and should be presented by academics within that wider context.

>is(are?)
Were. 'Is' and 'are' are present tense, 'was' and 'were' are past tense.

I was talking about people talking about the Troubles today, so present tense is perfectly appropriate.

It kicked off in the 70s.

As for being related no, the Poms had been stepping on the Paddies for a long time and Bloody Sunday was the tipping point that lead to a real insurgency.
For wars that are considered related they are all over trying to force either communism or capitalism on countries to form geopolitical alliances. While the IRA later leaned commie that was more about working class unity than actually forming a command economy as the Irish were historically workers exploited by british aristocracy.

You might as well try arguing that the push to tax the rich today is a communist plot rather than the working class just getting pissed at upward wealth transfer under neoliberalism pricing them out of housing,

Fair enough. For me, the Battle of the Bogside in '69 was the start.

Hmm. You might've changed my mind. I still feel that the temporal relationship of The Troubles to the Cold War doesn't get its fair due. The British troops deployed to NI were equipped and trained in an environment of getting ready to slug it out with the Soviets in northern Germany.

On a side note, found this kino picrel.
I'm finding it weirdly inconvenient to find good pictures of the BA in NI. Why was everyone using black and white cameras so much?
