I have an acog and I'm thinking about selling it. I think it's a better combat optic than a red dot and I'd rather have an acog for combat, but I can't think of a scenario other than literally red dawn or like a long term disaster where shit doesn't go back to normal for like over a year where I'd actually need the features that make an acog better over a red dot which is easier to use at ranges/in scenarios where self defense would be legal. Plus my red dot is lighter and doesn't get washed out by the wml.
I still think an acog kicked the shit out of irons for HD/self defense ranges and in shitty lighting conditions like inna house.

Just put together another rifle. The ACOG is really good at what it does - medium range combat. Yes, you will never need it but it's good to have two rifles anyway and the ACOG is fun to use.

Wait until the new year and get yourself an 11.5-12.5 SBR with just a dot.

ACOG is only really going to shine if you're reaching out past 100m or so. If you're inside that, then yah, even a cheapass red dot is going to offer slightly faster and cleaner shots. Constantly switching and re-zeroing is a bitch.

But like you said, the ACOG is a great battle sight when you need something that can be a decent red dot for room clearing but then also act as a decent low power optic with drop marks for ranging out to 300-500.

The correct option is clearly to buy a second rifle and specialize it for close, so you can keep the ACOG for battle shit.

if I use my acog inna house with the WML it washes out the chevron. I can both eyes open an acog inna house if I don't need to use the white light. the red dot doesn't get washed out

Generally I think I agree with everything you've said.
For a second I was going to suggest you might be able to use it for hunting, but even then I started thinking about shot placement using one and I'm like "eeeeehhhh..."
For all my purposes right now, I feel like I'd be better off with a LPVO.
That said unless you need the money I don't know that I'd bother selling it off. Might find you'd rather have it than not sooner than you think.

I have a real acog. if you use it in your house with a wml on and all your house lights are off the chevron will wash out because the wml will be brighter than the ambient light. this is a known issue, no gunz, where shooting from inside the shade like a house to outside washes out the chevron

I can't shoot with both eyes open using the etched reticle as a red dot if it's not illuminated. idk about you but I can only shoot both eyes opened with an illuminated reticle. If I want to use irons both eyes open the front sight needs to be painted like neon orange and be under bright light

Only reason why I'd sell an Acog is if I didn't have a gun to put it on, or if I really needed money I'd sell the Acog for a PA prism and pocket the difference. Fixed prism optics that are 2-5X magnification are basically an eternal classic with the old fashioned ruggedized red dot now.

I dunno. Ukraine has kind of exposed how overpriced a lot of optics are. At this point, it's likely more Russians have been killed on the wrong side of a Holosun than anything else. Yes, ACOGs can literally be blown up and keep going. While that might pop into your head if you yourself ever get blown up that at least your optic will be fine... you're probably dead if you get into the "performance envelope" where ACOG ever theoretically beats new offerings from competitors.

At the end of the day, it's all just superimposing a reticle onto your vision and keeping zero. That's it. Not exactly rocket science at this point.

Store brand is great. I think the PLxC is one of the best LPVOs on the market. The PA prism however is not the best prism on the market. As I already said, if they used their Japanese glass for a prism, I would be quite happy and it would probably then be better than an ACOG.

If you are on a tight budget that's ok. But it doesn't mean better things stop being better.

Here's my holosun. At first I was thrilled with it, it is in paper a vastly superior optic to the RMR I had. Then, it died after a few months of ownership for no reason. I had another that I returned for a refund, as it left the factory without the ability for windage adjustment. I have a third which still works great. 2/3 failure rate is not acceptable for me.
