how often was the .50cal jeep used in WW2?
every rifle company had a jeep with .50cal on it in the weapons squad, but its officially meant for light AA duty

did they just drive the jeep to the frontline and keep the gun pointed at the sky or did they keep it in reserve and then drive it to the front when they got reports of enemy planes?

They probably camped out close to the front, as it is a wheeled vehicle with more utility than "hurr durr gun bam".

I would imagine such jeeps would pull rear security often enough aswell.

Opportunistically. A shit box unarmored jeep on the front lines is generally not a good idea.

The Luftwaffe sort of stopped existing after a bit, so pretty much anything with a fifty became an infantry mulcher instead.

it sounds like a better idea than firing it from a tripod
you have the same armor, which is none, but you can drive away at high speeds if things go south

how often would they have fielded the spare M2 in combat?
the only spare men in the weapons section was the HQ

Generally agree but you are about 3 feet higher so there are some mild drawbacks. Still worth spraying lead for a bit.

The gun, pillar, ammunition, and gunner would have taken up most of the Jeep's carrying capacity. There must have been plenty of other things to carry.

Not necessarily unarmored.

>wait for the TDs?
>we dont have time for that
the armored jeeps were mostly used by cav units, since they believed in recon by fire

As much as nobody wants to move a heavy ass .50 around, "death before dismount" is almost guaranteed to get your ass killed. Having the field of fire to see your enemy while standing in the back of a jeep means everybody can see your dumb ass standing in the back of a jeep, and when a .50 is firing it becomes every enemys immediate concern. You will not be able to use the pipe the .50 is mounted on for effective cover. You are not going to drive away faster than the bullets chasing you. You are not Audey Murphey. You are going to die.

>You are not going to drive away faster than the bullets chasing you
you can drive away much faster than you can run, so you can shoot and scoot

All I know is there was one at Lanzerath ridge, because the unit traded in their war memorabilia to get one.
