Yeah. Gun based systems are needed for cost efficency, or laser but that has its own drawbacks. The problem is getting the gun to where it is needed on a strategic scale, when you are trying to defend all your industrial infrastructure and energy grid in a massive theatre as Ukraine and Russia are.
Existing CIWS like the Phalanx are great, but expensive and you need to have them in the right place, and enough ammo capacity to deal with a large wave
Phalanx is probably overkill for just Gerans
Moderately effective yet easily producable solution: Figure out best calibre and fire rate for a ground based system to quickly and efficiently destroy them, use computer assisted targeting. Mount on a fast vehicle, control and command using intel from ground raders and AEW&C. A number of light vehicles stationed near possible flight paths could move to intercept if detected in proper time. Main downsides would be reliance on shit tier backroads and civilian traffic. Yes, I guess a toyota could be used...
Better longterm solution: Unmanned fixed wing drones that can outpace a Geran and shoot them down. Launchable from a vehicle, controlled from ground or air.
Projects like the plans to create semi-autonomous wingmate drones for jets could be very good at this, multiplying their ability to engage and destroy drones quite cheaply. Assuming they have a cannon.
