America is trying to use carriers vs another superpower that has spent trillions and configuring it's entire military strategy around sinking said carrier strike groups. It's not outdated or obsolete, so much as a lot less survivable vs a peer opponent. China will use her carriers the same way America does, mainly as a negotiation tactic used to bully 3rd world nations, it won't be survivable in a hot war with even a mid tier power.

Do you really think Chinese carriers will be useful if China tries to fight the USN in the middle of the pacific? Even if you give China a dozen nuclear supercarriers, they will be sunk in the opening rounds of the fight, they're just too vulnerable vs a peer opponent. UUV, USV, hypersonic, SSNs, all of them are just getting better and better. The carrier is gonna to get more and more vulnerable, unless someone can get lasers working.

I get that it is designed to handle local conditions but why would you complicate things with a launch at the end of typhoon season?

Would be laff if they did it in December and dropped off some crayons and stripper calendars all gift-wrapped to a secret USMC forward base.

>>64492267
That's good though?

>>64492668
I see it more as a fleet-in-being that's scaling up to a local superiority concept in the same way the US navy operated in the Caribbean. It's not like China isn't a champion at long-form historical examples going into how it does planning.

Sure it will be useful to fly the flag and maybe do some aid stuff but China is shy with overseas deployments even under a UN flag.

Have you ever considered that the pacific is a massive area of ocean to have persistent ISR over and US doctrine dictates operating dispersed groups at the edge of the a2/ad range until they are proven to be easily jammable memes?

nice.
now the question is what are they going to use it for. they don't need to play world police or protect Israel, after all.

nearly a full decade to build a flattop that doesn't even cross into the 6 figure tonnage range is fucking slow as balls. The last Nimitz class took 5 years to build and even the Ford with all it's problems took only 7 years 8 months to build.

If war between China and America is gonna break out, it's gonna to be over Taiwan. If America needs to hide it's carriers 1000 km out in the middle of the pacific to avoid getting sunk, it's ability to contest chinese air forces is gonna to be heavily degraded due to range limitations, while China can launch her aircraft from inland airbases just a few hundred km away and not have to worry about range or sortie rates.

But yeah, anywhere pass the 1st island chain and China gets smoked.

You're confusing building and commissioning. The Fujian took ~6 years to build, it took 4 years more to commission

US CVs have 4 cats not to launch 4 planes at the same time, that is not possible due to spacing anyways. They have 4 cats because US cats are unreliable and break down all the time.

It's their very first flat top, so they're on schedule for the most part. What they need is a 'final' design to replicate and reduce construction time for future carriers, which is probably the type 004. Once they've 'mastered' this design, it'll take future carriers significantly less to build/commission. They did the same thing with nuclear powerplants (brought down from 10 years to 6-7 years)

How soon you guys think this one will catch on fire?
My money's on exactly 89 days after it first puts to sea for trials.
Anyone know how I can set up a betting pool for this?
We should start gambling on things like this.
