Why do guys build and buy these high end ARs when, I don't want to say a poverty pony is just as good, but like any mid reliable AR is going to be just as capable within the envelope you're likely to ever use an AR in anger for?
t. someone who has like a $1,600 competition rifle which would be more expensive if I had an optic instead of comp sights

Why anyone buys anything other than an XCR and then proceeds to brag about making the wrong choice is beyond me. Some people are just raccoons that like rooting around through the trash, Anon.

Honestly, the civilian firearms industry is mostly a luxury industry, and so practicality is secondary to perceived value and the ability to show off. You'll get people trying to rationalize it, just like women rationalize an expensive perfume costing more than a regular one, but in reality the miniscule differences either do not exist or only apply to a level of utilization and skill not possessed by the average consumer.

It's fun. You might as well ask the computer nerds why they bother tweaking their video cards and CPUs when the plot of the video games they play is the same either way, or why gearheads fiddle with their cars even though they never drive them on a racetrack.

I want a chrome lined barrel.
I want a freefloated rail.
I shoot more than once a month.
I have money and its my hobby.
> mid reliable AR is going to be just as capable within the envelope you're likely to ever use an AR
Show me something that costs less than a bcm or dd upper that is just as accurate or reliable, isnt plagued with qc issues, doesnt have an out of spec chamber, a dogshit bolt carrier, or an improperly installed barrel that will suffer throat erosion in under 1k.

I feel like we need to know what you consider "high end" vs "mid" to answer your question. As you've already admitted, a PSA is not as reliable as a BCM or Daniel Defense, so if your use case even POTENTIALLY includes home defense, there's your reason for not picking poverty parts right there.

That's for long-term reliability under automatic fire. Barrels designed for accuracy are never chrome-lined. You don't even know what you want or why, you're just consooooming terms you heard other people use but don't understand.

Free-floated barrel* yup im retarded.
Ill agree that buying a kac or some shit like that is throwing money away unless your a collectorfag or something but the is often benefits to throwing +$750 at a quality upper.

This is very accurate. For the vast majority of firearm owners there is no use for their guns aside from rare self defense scenarios, carry, and hunting. So all that's left is training with the guns which most people don't enjoy or even want to pursue. So what's there to talk about except brands, mythology, caliber wars and flexing on the poors?

If the extra money spent doesn’t confer real benefit, it’s Autism and signalling

I have a rifle I spent like $4500 on. My reason is autism - it’s an ultralight 5.56. I haven’t touched it in like 3 years but IIRC it’s 4.2lbs (16”). The lower can still lose 2-3oz, and the gas block maybe a half ounce. I picked parts based on almost exclusively weight. If I found myself torn between 2 triggers, I picked the lighter one. No gay lightening cuts. Carbon fiber stock and handguard. It’s pretty sick.

I have around 10k of mostly Tula, Wolf, and Brown Bear through an old Windham era Bushmaster and it still works fine. I know that's not a truly high round count, but I used to shoot much more than I do now; went from having the time, but not the money for more than steel case, to having the money, but not the time. That's why I'm skeptical of the benefits of spending $3-5k on a 5.56 AR though. Does it really do anything my old Bushy can't? The only thing I can think of is a chrome lined barrel, and those don't cost that much.

It would be less annoying if the rollmark hypebeasts just admitted that is what they are instead of trying to play it off as if you'll instantly die if you ever have to use your gun and it's the wrong brand. The fact that they usually have spotless guns that show no evidence of ever having been shot doesn't help their cause either.

usually people build the high end ones because they already have a low or mid end AR15 so they don't really Need a rifle as much as they Want something special
they only exception would be a tard who went to /arg/ for advice on his first gun and was convinced they needed to drop 2k or die in the streets

To be fair, $2k is pretty cheap for a quality semi-automatic rifle. PSA kicked off a race to the bottom and we're looking at pricepoints where you know quality has to be an issue. Anything $1500-$3000 I would put in a good range for a quality duty rifle that you should expect no issues with. Higher pricepoint and you're getting past diminishing returns into special use case territory. Get below $1500 and you should still expect a functional firearm, but understand that QC may be an issue and expect a lower round count before replacing major components.

>an AR is an AR
Spoken like someone who doesn't know anything about ARs. I watched this mulatto kid rack his shitty 500 dollar AR and the charging handle broke in half. He coped about it super hard to me as I went back to shooting my Geissele(zero malfunctions btw). Guys who say an "AR is an AR" also think ARs aren't reliable

in theory the high end stuff is more accurate, but it's one of those things where it's not really going to make a difference inside 300 yards and odds are you aren't shooting a dude beyond 300 yards anyway

>civilian firearms industry is mostly a luxury industry
Correct, for new build guns and people that consume them.
If I was filthy rich, wouldn't waste time on guns built in the past half century, it'd *all* be poured into mid-twentieth century (and some earlier) manufacture firearms.

Technology of firearms itself, as far as the accuracy and effectiveness on-target (whether for warfare, self defense, or competition marksmanship) is mostly and primarily related to fine machine metal craftsmanship. Whenever your gun was constructed, if it was built/machined to a high standard and in a suitable round chambering then odds are it's going to be dead nuts accurate and effective depending on the user's proficiency.
(Yes obviously there's optics as well but that's all debatable and per-end-user-application; and becomes more central-critical to the niche of long range shooting)

Yeah, I'm giving some grace for an upgraded trigger, muzzle device, charging handle, and quality sights/optic. Regardless you'd still probably be all-in at around $1300, which is pretty stupidly cheap for a semi-auto rifle.

Why buy a BMW when you can just stick a turbo in a Camry? Performance is the same but fit and finish is better, and it generates more seethe from the poors. Some of us are psychopaths who have to feel better than everyone else over trivial things. You wouldn't get it.
