It doesn't even need to be real; the people who benefit from keeping the hate machine running will just make up people and events, they don't even need to be out of real freaks to do that. The good/normal will be demanded to answer for the fake and "what if-s" too.
It's not fair and it's not meant to be.
This is why gatekeeping is an essential part of community: when a weirdo does weirdo shit and some eager wretch demands you answer for it, you can say "they're not with us" and ignore the interrogation.
