I actually think the 90s were the best time for being a tranny.
People weren't over the top "what are your pronouns" level of accepting like in the 2010s, but if you were a tranny in the 90s most of us would just react with laid back understanding and curiosity.
And the lack of visibility trannies had back then was a good thing for trannies. The only bad representation was stuff like men in dresses on the Jerry Springer Show or the villain being a tranny in Ace Ventura, but nobody tool that stuff seriously and Ace Ventura used a hot woman to play its tranny character.

i always think about how great the Obama era was not even just from a trans perspective but it’s always a plus when the majority culture is at least relatively liberal leaning. we’re seeing just how hell a dominant right wing culture is right now.

If you could pass at least it would probably be pretty easy to fly under the radar, although if you couldnt pass you were basically on the level of a circus freak, the sort pulled up on Jerry Springer shows etc. The lack of information available was a nightmare though, like you couldnt get referred to your local "gender clinic" or even find a guide to DIY on the internet.
To elaborate id say the 2010s were probably the best era to come out as a tranny. Information was freely available, Informed consent freely pushed, lots of positive media representation, people knew enough to be polite and respectful towards you but they havent been programmed with a fanatical hatred that we see a lot today. Sure pronoun circles are FUCKING ANNOYING but they are designed for those in the early stages of coming out
