It's probably not ignorance of the difference in spelling and meaning. It's just really common for native speakers to occasionally make spelling mistakes with homophones because they're just transcribing the thoughts that appear in their head and the writing spelling that comes to mind first without thinking too much, even if they'd be able to explain it logically.
Like, I understand the difference between "their," "they're," and "there," and I almost always write them correctly in the right contexts, but I occasionally write something blatantly wrong like "there" when I meant "their," and those are the moments where I wasn't thinking.
It happens in other languages, too.
Spanish speakers will write "a ver" instead of "haber" and confuse "echo" with "hecho." French speakers will confuse the past participle with the infinitive because they sound the same. Japanese people will use the wrong kanji for words with homophones.
