The powers at be, or our "benefactors" find it more profitable and safer for them if the masses fight each other. You can look back and see a huge spike in people's "interest" into politics for seemingly no reason around that time too. Or how nobody cares about gay shit at all but it suddenly started to become an issue again? A black man was elected as president. Somehow I think today there would be more struggle in that regard.
