If you're young enough that you're new to politics then this is a good time to learn that there are ALWAYS these sorts of hysterical claims, from both sides, because that's what democracies devolve into. The last election was decided by a few million votes and that's why the rhetoric is always so insane and over the top, because these people will say literally anything to scare more people into coming out to vote.
I remember having an argument with a friend who later came out as trans during Obama's second run for president so what, sometime in 2012? I had told them that I didn't really care for Obama; I felt that he had nice rhetoric but policy-wise, he was more or less identical to the previous Republican president. I said that I wasn't planning to vote at but if I hypothetically did, it wouldn't be for Obama.
This set off a huge fight (mostly a lecture directed at me) about how if Obama didn't get elected, LGBT people were going to be literally murdered in the streets. This person believed this 100%. They thought that this was a life or death choice and unironic right wing death squads were going to hunt them down if Romney got elected. On the other side, my conservative family members were telling me that if Obama got re-elected, he was going to turn the U.S. into a Marxist Islamic Republic and set up FEMA death camps for right wing whites. They also believed this 100%.
People want their team to win and if they can twist the truth enough, or even just flat out lie, in a way that will encourage you to vote for their side, they will happily do it. Democracies aren't about who's right; they're about who can say the right things to convince more people to support them. Whether or not those things are truth has absolutely no relevance. In case you need a refresher on this, you can refer to the most recent U.S. presidential election.
