I'm sure some debate-team nerd knows a specific term for this, this is something I see midwits doing all the time - they're nitpicking the phrasing of an argument and acting as if that means they BTFO the substance of the argument, they're diverting the argument into meaningless semantics and avoiding the substance and spirit of the discussion so that they can be pithy and smug and disguise bigotry behind a thin veneer of intellectualism.
