gender dysphoria refers to both the social (gender) and the biological (sex). both must be fulfilled in order to relieve the dysphoria, hence medical transition. if it was as simple as changing gender to match natal sex 99% of trannies wouldn’t exist cause who would want to live like this?

I get where you're coming from but a lot of people would and do, dysphoria isn't what makes you trans, it's conviction.

This. I don't see where the confusion is OP. Surgeries serve the purpose of dealing with parts of their bodies that causes dysphoria. But the reason why those traits cause dysphoria are heavily linked to how society perceive gender (based on sex). Sex and gender are related (not tied) due to social reinforcement

this part
you don't have much of a choice, unfortunately, in either case.
if i could have "changed my gender" to man and not transitioned, i probably would have. that seems easy and painless. i transitioned because i did not like my body, though....and while gender is sort of nebulous and volatile, ironically i think it is more rigid than sex, in the sense that i can fairly easily change some of the features of my physical body to align with what my brain says feels nice, but it's really hard, if not impossible, to change how i feel in my brain on purpose.
the way i think about my "gender" HAS changed over the years, so it definitely is not some static thing (at least not for everyone) but it's not something i believe you can change by choice.
