He would come home from work and immediately go to the unfinished basement. He would not come up for anything. If we wanted to hang out we would watch movies down there with him. My dad taught me martial arts, sometimes by punching me, and fishing and leather care. He wanted to teach me abalone diving, but my mom had a cow about it.

Yes and sometimes my Mom would get mad because I'd flinch or be scared because my Dad was able to throw harder without even trying.

Oddly enough my Dad was super laid back, but my Mom was more strict and enforcing of masculinity

My father was a teenager who had no business being a parent. To his credit, he tried to find some sort of script to follow and so he got into sports. Unfortunately, this amounted to me getting harassed and smacked around during my entire childhood because his frustration with having to take care of me just transferred over into frustration that I wasn't going to grow up to be a professional athlete. Nightmarish. Literally, I have nightmares about that fucker to this day.
