Its a tool of denial as any other coping mechanism like drugs or alcohol. At least in my experiance its a way to induce dissociation even if that is not the directly stated goal that is the end effect is increasing mind body separation which eases pain.
Its a fucking awful state to be in and I wouldn't wish it on anyone but Id assume its why so many teens and young people turn to it, because they cant quite as effectively turn to drugs and alcohol as an adult would, and as to why an adult would do it, its either sheer inertia or wanting specifically the dissociative effects of it.
True acceptance of outstanding circumstances is extraordinary difficult, and you can very well think you've accepted your situation and be coping just as much as before. Egos are very slippery things and don't like to be told no.
