>what is /voicegen/?
/voicegen/ is primarily a general made for trans people on /lgbt/ to share recordings of their voices so as to get feedback, advice, or opinions, to help achieve the voice they want. This does not mean that you must be trans to post! Remember that this is a community-led thread and not a source for professional advice; please be kind to one another!

>how do I post?
It's easy - just record yourself on vocaroo.com, rate others in the thread, and post! That last point is very important - to keep the thread alive and ensure engagement, it is strongly recommended to NOT respond to those who don't do their part, as it is very impolite and leads to threads dying. You need not be an expert; trying your best is all we ask! Even a simple rating can be helpful.

>how do I get started?
There are several ways! You're always welcome to ask for advice here, and there is a wealth of video and written resources available online. However, we tend to believe that there is no alternative to repeated practice and reflection, so exercises that advertise "get a passing voice quick" tend to be confirmation bias from people with a great natural ability to control their voice.
That said, some channels to watch are:
Zoey Alexandria (rip)
TransVoiceLessons

>what do I read?
What we would recommend is to vary what you read aloud - this might be divided into three broad categories:
- flat reading, as if you were reading to an audience, in a neutral, affectless way, usually to focus more on things like pitch or resonance, and less on things like cadence, diction, or intonation
- voice acting, as in you find some piece of media to act: do intonations, try different voices, have fun! Edge Studio is a known resource for texts such as these.
- talking, as in just talking as yourself: improvise, imagine a conversation!

It’s a bit nasal and sounds like you are putting in some effort. It’s not awful, I think most cis people wouldn’t think much of it but those who know trans women could tell

Here is my voice. I wasn’t sure what to say so I read a portion of an audio drama I love (The Magnus Archives)
https://voca.ro/12ZnDCNmLoXo
Im talking long here and am mostly focused on the reading so hopefully this is a realistic sample. Don’t feel any need to listen to the whole thing. Any advice is super appreciated.

I like your voice but i can see how it could get you clocked. I think its prob fine for most people but those who interact with tranners would recognize it. I think the issue is that it sounds like youre trying i guess? not as effortless as some others. Also its a bit nasally, but like so is ever other tgirl.

anyone got tips for how to reduce vocal fry? People irl + even in voicegen threads say my voice passes female, but I find i always sound kinda tired or sick and i'm still figuring out how to not be totally monotone, so idk, just been rlly open to ways I could improve either of those while I'm at least making progress on the monotony but have no clues on the fry.

oh hey, I think that was my comment
before the actual advice, just note that it will probably just take some trial and error/recording and listening to yourself
>for the actual advice
okay so let's do an exercise to show you the physical difference
first, put your hand on your chest
next, I want you to groan as if a problem you've been having all day just came back after you thought you fixed it
lastly, take a normal breath and breathe out gently and quietly
>what did you feel?
if you vocalized normally, the groan should have resonated in your chest; it will have felt more like male voice, while the breath should not have resonated, but you would have felt the air passing through your chest but not resonating there; that will have felt more like what female voice will eventually feel like
my golden rule: female speech is essentially vocalized breathing, at least that's what it should feel like
but very importantly female speech is not inherently breathy, and that's the key difference
so I would suggest as an exercise that you practice breathing gently and saying super softly (not even whispering) one-syllable sounds as you do (I'm just saying "hi")
after you do this a number of times, try adding vocalization; engage the vocal folds. as you do, pay attention to how the sensation changes
note the exact moment the resonance goes into your chest, if it does; what physical movement caused it?
you've got it love <3

pass, I think of a 21st-century woman with a sultry voice, bad bitch vibes
mhmm too much effort is counterproductive I think, winds up sounding forced

>>40561809
can I ask where your accent comes from?
this sounds good, pitch is good, qualities overall are good
there's an edge of chest resonance or lower pitch "sneaking" in, maybe do some exercises to focus on how your body positioning and how you hold your voice changes as you speak?

>>40562067
so obviously it's hard because you got clocked, but your voice sounds great and always has
I sort of understand your concern because it is a little lower in pitch and there's a buzziness to it
but at the same time it sounds really good. I feel like with a tiny elevation in pitch and a little more gentle enunciation, you'd sound a lot like this really cool veteran woman I knew in college
>two very simple practical things to try:
1) slow pace slightly and enunciate
2) note whether air is coming out of your nose as you speak, and how much
note also how much tension you hold in your nasal area, if any
try to pass a small portion of your air through your nose; this is how you (can) get resonance and a lightness to the voice without being breathy, but it takes practice

>>40562724
you sound nice, a lot like a good friend of mine. she's also trans but passes really well
you speak pretty quickly, and I think slowing down would help you speak more softly/crisply and also allow you to focus more on your own voice
what do you feel in your throat as you speak? is it tense or relaxed?

>>40563003
I've never heard your speaking voice so this is hard but you sound pretty good

It's one of the hard things to figure out but try making sounds that don't rumble your chest and try to copy that in speech.

Look up head voice or face voice on youtube but you are on the right track when there's no rumble in your chest when you speak if you want to feminize your voice.
