Why is that?

There are good legal, social and moral reasons for it. And yet it contradicts biological reality in a certain sense because when people say parent, the default assumption is that they mean biological parent.

Once you answer that question, you'll understand why transgender people should be allowed to change their documents. It's a net social good when done right.

Using legal identification as a way of marking people with a scarlet letter is bad for everyone in the long run.
