Yes, the colors both first showed up on the phili pride flag together and at the time the idea was that brown = PoC (pretty nakedly just African Americans, since there are plenty of non-brown queer PoC) and black = queer people who died of aids.
But because of what was happening in America at the time (as well as a bunch of lazy reporting and attempts to hijack by woke racial nationalists), the popular narrative was that both stripes just represent black people.
It is a real shame, since I personally really like the idea of recognizing the scar that aids left on the community. But now it just gets lumped in with the gross brown stripe that only represents American racial hangups that they have now forced the rest of the world to deal with.
