Settle down, shill. You have to read something anon wrote first, to condemn. Use your head and keep your wits about you. Such as they are, and all. Maybe try a little prune juice. Might make you less cranky.

I'm going to give a real answer for the one serious person who wants to advertise their book. I run a marketing agency (not for books though).
>
Your starting point should be main stream social media - it is currently the most effective way of reaching a targeted audience at scale. The algorithm is designed to connect your content with people who are interested in it. If your book has a somewhat mass market appeal (Within the demographic of readers) then short form content will be the best. However, if your target is quite niche, longer form content will be better.
>
In terms of what to post exactly, its a three step process.
First, identify who your target audience is. Get as specific as possible about exactly what kind of person would be interested in your book.
Then, identify what kind of content that type of person consumes, what platforms, etc.
Finally, post that type of content on those platforms to attract those kinds of people.
>
Then post so much volume of high quality content that it would be unreasonable for you not to succeed. This entire strategy is free, but it requires work so you won't do it, you'll just complain. Did you think marketing something was easy? Best of luck.

If you want any sort of visibility, you will need to secure a few ARC reviews on your books Amazon/Goodreads page.
ARC are advance review copies, so what this means is, you will get good reviews on your book the day it comes out.
The best way to get your ARC into readers hands, if you don't have your own newsletter, is Booksprout.
Yes, you will need to pay.
Even after you pay, you are not guaranteed reviews on your book.

Right, but how do you do those things, like specifically?
Where do I actually go and how do I advertise. Let's say I have a science fiction novel I want to shill. Where and how do I shill it? Do I just go here and make shitty threads, do I go to, may Allah forgive me for saying this, Reddit? I don't have Facebook or Instagram or any social media account. So even if I do make those accounts I don't 1000's of friends to shill it to. Or do I just pay those sites to put ads on their websites?

>If you had written a masterpiece, how would you go about advertising it?
Social media and YouTube mainly.
And no, not from being a influence or trying to be internet famous.

I mean make basically advertisements tailored to those platforms and give samples to "influences" who match demographics with the target audience.

Maybe do a crowd fund for a special fancy super limited edition hard bound version if hype is building.

If I had extra time do video essays and make short literary post about the process of creating the masterpiece, about thought and feeling relating to the inspirations that went into it, and positively posting about stuff similar to the masterpiece with at the end of the post/video saying
>Hey, if you also like this thing then you are sure to love my thing
>click on the link to buy now!

Probably a better way to do it, but it's not too expensive nor a full time job onto it's self.

Most publishers don't do that or anything close to that.
At most they might get your book table space in a decent number of stores and a eye catching cover design. After that they are done with marketing.

I have one book finished, second one pretty much done, working on the third one when time allows it and imagination kicks in. I self-published on Amazon, twice, but because I have a full-time job and the attention span of a chipmunk, I don't really have the time or the patience to do social media marketing. The finished book is currently delisted because I thought putting it on Patreon would be a better idea since it gives you more royalties, and that has gone nowhere, unexpectedly.
Deep down I don't really want to make money with my story, I just want other people to read it and tell me they enjoyed it. Or not, but I'm not changing the story or the characters for anyone's sake. It's not a masterpiece or anything of the sort and I'm well aware of that, but I do love it, for all that's worth.
I guess the question I am asking is should I try sending it to publishers, or if I should really make an effort to self-publish. The thread has given me some good pointers about where and how to start that endeavor, it's just daunting.
Sorry for the rambling.

I did actually, but that also went nowhere. I had one person comment on the prologue I think, but that was it. Again, I never did any proper marketing for it.
>If you don't think that highly of it, it's not going to sell.
Well, I've always been a very humble person, so I guess I am biased the other way around? The few people who bothered to read my book when I directly asked them to told me they liked it, but there was one who told me it was okay, but not amazing, happened to be the person who reads the most out of everyone I asked.
