Just got done with Battle Ground after reading the series over the last 2 years. I didn't hate BG like i've seen others. It was like a Dresden files movie.

I'm just fucking tired of the winter knight bullshit. White council also sucks dick.

First two books are genuinely awful then it becomes kino. Why donโ€™t authors just write well the whole time?

Sounds similar to the Laundry Files series by Charles Stross. It combines Lovecraftian horror, computers/mathematics, and bureaucracy.

Agreed. All three books have their moments but they aren't good. I remember enjoying the first book, hating the second, and stopping for a while to read something completely different during the third. Also book 4 whilst much better, left me hoping for no more fae, winter/summer stuff. Little did i know.

Dead Beat is where the series goes full throttle.

I might be a little too hard on Ghost Story, it was a good idea and there are some scenes i really liked, but overall the whole thing didn't work for me.

I have a seething annoyance with Harry since he turned down Marcone. Marcone offered him an incredible deal that would have solved almost all of his problems. Harry even admits that Marcone is a good guy in his soul vision thing, and he still turned him down for some bullshit ethical reasons. Harry is like what a 16 year old thinks is cool. Turning down Marcone wasn't cool or heroic, it was suicidally stupid.

I don't know about that, Marcone isn't a good guy, just extremely practical. And whilst he does often help Dresden, things like the reveal at the end of Battleground prove that he will do anything practical to continue his expansion of power.

But yeh Dresden being like "Hey we are working together now but one day i'll take you down" everytime they work together is pretty stupid.

Dresden should've just plowed her silly. Would've solved alot of problems. And Daddy Carpenter seemed cool with it.

Marcone is more like an anti-hero than anything. He's the "good mafia" trope. His offer in the first book was basically, "I will give you literally anything you want, you just have to give me advice, sometimes." Harry pisses me off. I read 10 books, and he still pisses me off.

What ARE the Dresden Files? Is this just fantasy sleuthing or what? Blank meets blank meets blank = Dresden Files.

Well lads?

He's a Wizard Detective/Investigator at the start and it grows into a kind of epic urban fantasy, lot's of factions, lot's of consequences for the things Harry does. Harry keeps doing what's right and he keeps getting deeper in trouble.

Like if the Buffyverse had better more serious worldbuilding. Philip Marlowe meets Buffy maybe.

This is the best explanation for Dresden Files' first couple of books
Seventeen novels later it's entered the final arc so we're now in apocalyptic supernatural war territory

It is a mess though. It introduces Michael and family, but really just stumbled it's way from scene to scene before getting to the red court party which was obviously the whole idea for the book.

Lots of important plot threads start here but the book itself isn't good.

perhaps
but like I said, one way or another, it was THE book which hooked me
Storm Front and the second book were so obviously amateurish that I was ready to pack it in as I picked up Grave Peril, I told myself it was the last book I was going to read in the series

so what can I say? it is what it is

what got me hooked was when summer knight
especially the scene where he and the werewolf manlet goes down to the tunnels and finds a booming 20s dance floor and all the enslaved jazz sax player dying
that was fun
