>buying physical books in 2025

That is only valid once you already read a book on your e-reader/phone, liked it and want a physical copy. Otherwise, it's just stupidity.

Used books and used book stores are fun though.
Even if the book is bad it was two dollars and you get something tangible, something to sit on your coffee table, something to talk about, and something you can give or lend to a friend or family member.
Doesn't work the same way with files or e-readers.

I'm not one of those "EBOOKS ARE NOT REAL™ READING" faggots but the experience of reading a paperback is inherently more enjoyable. Holding it in your hand, folding the spine, making your way through the pages, putting a bank note inside as a bookmark. It's a small stuff but it matters to overall fun of reading.

Reading on kindle is for people that are rarely on their computers, otherwise it’s tiring. I have to spend a long time on mine and my pee brain can’t help being on YT shorts, so reading is all I have left besides going outside for a bit every day.

Ebooks are just zip files of html. It's extremely easy to convert them to other formats and DRM is trivial to strip. They're also tiny and easy to edit if that's ever necessary. You can read them anywhere - if your device can read html, it can read an ebook
They're the one media format that they actually got 100% right. They are superior to physical in every single way, particularly if you're looking for a long-term personal library because they are so much more durable and safe than physical books
If a book is meaningful to you, buy physical. But if you want it to last, go ebook

In theory, no personal library is strictly for yourself, but for prospective progeny and their education. A home without a good book selection may as well be Epstein Island. But yes, ideally one would only have authors' complete works for those they loved, and the rest selections as one saw fit.

Using computer or phone screens for a reference book that you are studying/making use of while doing things and learning something is a awful experience compared to having the physical book.

Since I am not poor I can just buy the best tool for the job from the onset and not have to deal with suboptimal conditions getting in the way of my goals. Using worse tools waste time and effort.

copium. It doesn't matter. Books survive for a decade or more without any care. Meanwhile who knows any brand sponsored malware can doctorate texts on your ebooks.
I also remember that kinddies can't pirate ebooks anymore cuz of the ban on sharing files with usb.
I don't get how people fell for the bullshit that digital media is better than physical media. It's really not and time will tell.

Hell nah.
eBooks don't have them vibe and that chill. Imagine drinking some wine, smoking some cigarette or smoking some pretentious pipe while reading on some goddamn eReader. Would feel like shit. But reading it on a book and maybe late at night at the desk is the best way to read.

And most important. If I have a problem or some shit I like to stand before my shelf and just look at the books. I instantly remember the "lessons" they had and then I find the right one I need in that situation. Or maybe take some book out of there and read a bit of it. You can go into your "library". An eReader can't do that. You need to look at some bad designed icons or img. Sounds like bad but cheap experience.

the only way they arent perfect is companies only implementing part of the spec or using a modified version of the spec. you could make something like whispersync or interactive fiction with epub, but no ereader app would support it. I recently digitized a verse with some notes to theright of each stanza and i spent hours banging my head against three wall trying to make something reflowable that looked good on kindles, kobos, koreader, fbreader, readium etc.

I buy books because when I download pdf I hardly read them past a thousand pages but when I purchase them in physical paper the sunk cost makes me read or risk coming to terms with the fact I've wasted my money. Same reason I'm more willing to 100% paid games and just beat pirated ones

Incorrect, of course. I collect history books not with the intention of reading them, but rather to cultivate the illusion of erudition for any guest who steps into my home. They serve as props—silent witnesses to a persona I’ve carefully curated—allowing me to fabricate elaborate historical narratives at will.

On one occasion, I even succeeded in convincing someone that the First World War was sparked by a gay sex party gone awry.

I’m keenly aware that none of my friends read. So really—who, I ask, is going to challenge me?
