Man: His Nature and Place in the World by Arnold Gehlen

To make the most of these you would want some familiarity with Kant's first critique at least, which itself deals with your question in a certain way.

My favorite perspective on this question is Schiller's in Letters Upon the Aesthetic Education of Man. Here he tries to bring the animal and rational components of humanity together.

The Difference Of Man And The Difference It Makes by Mortimer J. Adler might be another one to look at.
