ACTUALLY, the entire reason Eowyn (and Merry) kill the Witch King is because Tolkien thought Shakespeare cheated. The prophecy is that Macbeth could not be killed "by one of woman born," and in the end Macduff is able to get around this prophecy by revealing that he was cut from his mother's womb as she died. A C-Section, basically, and so Macduff was not technically "of woman born."

But Tolkien infamously thought this was a cheap copout and says so as much it at least one of his letters. So he wanted to do Shakespeare one better, and that's why the Witch King's prophecy is that "no living man may hinder me," and in the end he's not brought down by a man, he's brought down by a woman and a Hobbit.

Eowyn is a great character in the books. All the Rohirrim are. You can tell that he was drawing deeply on his fascination for Anglo-Saxon heroes and rituals for them. The same with Gollum who of course is Grendel.

Tolkien spun a better yarn than Shakespeare, but Shakespeare was so much more a master of prose and poetry that to prefer Tolkien is like to prefer McDonald's to wagyu. Both the pretentious dismissal of genre fiction, and the plebian dismissal of the classics are both symptoms of tastelessness.

Tolkien is flat out wrong. "Macduff was, from his mother's womb, untimely ripped." Is one of the greatest twists in literature and one of the best lines in the play.

Tolkien was also upset that Birnam wood didnt actually get up and walk to Dunsinane like the tree hearders. Did Tolkien know Macbeth was a history?

>"Begone, foul Dwimmerlaik, Lord of Carrion! Leave the dead in peace!"
>A cold voice answered: "Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."
>A sword rang as it was drawn. "Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may."
>"Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!"
>Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. "But no living man am I!"

And the history book that Shakespeare borrowed from also had witches in it, and the prophecy was self fulfilling. There was nothing magical about it. Macbeth is a story of a violent man using violence to solve all his problems. It's not about magic trees and virgin births or whatever.

If Tolkein wasn't great? No one would hate. What is the real problem, wasn't he Jewish enough for you shills?
And Eowyn was a great character. The big bad guy, is the ultimate heavy bad guy. He *literally* breathes fear. Imagine being the only person able to stand up and take on the very devil himself, riding essentially a big bad evil dragon.
Well, she does. She ducks the dragon head, and lops it off.
Calls him on.
She can't possibly win? But she won't run. She's a shield-maiden, not some girlboss larping.
For whatever reason, the intense immobilizing fear the bad gay can make in all men? Doesn't affect women quite as bad.
Little Meriodoc, Merry. He loves her and looks up to her. In some pure, non sexual way. They're ALL dead anyways. Just charging hell with a bucket of water.
Tiny Merry, who can;t fight well ayways and is too small even at that? When she's smashed and finally down, he manages to stand under the breathe-fear spell. He realizes he;s dead anyways, they all know it. Why not...
so he rushes the big bad guy, and does an "Achilles".
Allowing her to walk up to the now injured for the first time devil himself bad guy. To deliver the coup-de-grace.

The rpophecy doesn't mean much if there's one-hundred-and-one fantasy races to whom it doesn't apply, does it? There's no possibility of taking false comfort in a promise of immunity to harm when nine-tenths of the world's dwarfs, imps, elves, and faery people aren't covered by it. Bit meaningless really.

Not so. The elves, in particular. Recognize that their tie is over. They were planning to leave, for their... awesome realm they can go to. It was the elves time, now? It is to be MAN'S time.
Th elves are in a way, turning over stewardship of middle earth, to the next thing... man.

Yes. The dagger Merry used was forged by Dunedain of the North who fought long war against the Witch-King in the past. The barrow hobbits got it was one of the royal barrows (deflied by Witch-King's necromancy).
I like how the prophecy made Witch-King so sure of himself, yet he quotes it wrong; it doesn't say that he is immune to any attack made by men, but that one day he WILL be defeated (by someone who isn't a man).
And there is another no-man taking part in his defeat: if not for Frodo, Sam and Gollum, Witch-King may have returned becuase his ring still was active.

(google was my friend today)
No, The Lord of the Rings is not four books. It's often called a trilogy due to its publication in three volumes: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. However, these are just divisions of a single novel, which is divided internally into six books. The book The Hobbit is a separate novel that also takes place in Middle-earth.
(anon's note: my apologies? But, I was loaned four books to read, lol)

It wasn't even a big prophecy or anything. Glorfiendel just casually remarks after chasing him out of Angmar that he'll "fall by no man's hand", and funnily enough, even the villain himself takes these words as gospel
