In Platonism, the material world is not evil, but imperfectโ€”a shadow or image of the perfect world of Forms. It has value insofar as it participates in the intelligible, eternal realities. The Demiurge (in Timaeus) is a benevolent craftsman, creating order from chaos out of goodness and reason. So for Plato, matter is not evil; it's less real, but still a meaningful part of the cosmos.

The material world per se is neutral. We can choose to use it for evil by exploiting its reward systems and ignoring the consequences of our actions. Being mindful of the consequences of our actions is the path to good. Essentially what is good or evil about the material world is our psychological relationship to it.
