Successive generations are losing the ability to read in third person. In a few decades there will only be 3rd grade-level AI-written slop catering to the lowest denominator. People are going to lose the ability to empathize with other human beings and to think abstractly. Reading a text closely will be an extinct skill by the end of the century; there will be no one left able to read the likes of Dickens for example. Human beings are demonstrably and evidently becoming dumber and dumber with less capacity to think abstractly. Soon it won't just be sub-80 IQ jigaboos not able to answer the proverbial "how would you feel if you didn't eat breakfast this morning?" it'll be everyone. Are we fucked? We're definitely fucked.

There are a few. A couple of good ones are Bright Lights Big City by Jay McInerney and Ablutions by Patrick DeWitt. Or if you're after something more classic /lit/ there's always If On A Winter's Night A Traveller by Italo Calvino.

Is this even a real phenomenon, or just another overblown social media trend? I understand the preference for one type of narration over another, but I can't fathom how someone could "have trouble" or "lose the ability" to read third-person narration. After all, this is the most common way to describe the actions of others in everyday speech.

The problem with second person is it's hard to write about what the other characters are thinking and feeling because you are stuck in your (protaganist's) head, which neccessarily limits the scope of the narrative and how long it can persist in length without becoming blind and muddled. In works in pic, but its more novella than novel. Calvino used alternating chapters of second and omnipresent third person to overcome that limitation: think like how Sorrows of Young Werther switches to third person once Werther has blown his brains out and can no longer write the letters of the epistolary novel, it works best with some creative switches of perspective to illuminate the blind spots of second person. But it is surprisingly viable, makes the events less distant, more intensely experienced and felt by (you) the reader-protagonist who is literally doing the things rather than reading about someone else doing them.

And you know who must take the blame?
Women and their preference for the 1st person view in their crappy sub-bestial violent and atavistic porn that is masquerading as fantasy, sci-fi, literary fiction, mystery, horror, thriller, and romance and that dominates the markets in quantities exceeding India's demographic.
At this point if a book is written in 3d person, then the author is a male or troon (still male).
Onyx Storm should be burned, along with Twilight, 50 Shades, Garden, and the lesser female excrements. They have literally dumbed down a whole fucking generation.
So much for women being the smart girlboss intellectual sex. Women dumbed down the whole English speaking cultural sphere.

Yeah, that's not at all the way I learned it. 3rd person was always split into three sub-categories.

1st person = your eyes
2nd person = your invisible observer
3rd person = eye following character (objective), essence inside character (limited), or eye of god (omniscient)

I'm aware that we like shitting on zoomers, but it's getting grim at this point.
There's no doubt in my mind that the kid quote tweeted is joking. We should be
literate enough to detect bait.

That being said, Generation Alpha is legitimately fucked. At least here in
Canada, schools stopped teaching students how to phonetically read words and
instead taught them to learn through memorization. My girlfriend's little sister
has been unable to read any word she isn't taught to speak; she can read cat, or
mat, but if she's shown bat she's unable to pronounce it.

The change in teaching was done to aid those unable to grasp phonetic reading;
however, it's left about five years worth of students barely literate.

It's too high level.
The reason is very simple but no one will point it out because it politically incorrect as fuck.
>Women infiltrate publishing business
>Women overtake the writing sphere
>Women nowadays write almost always in 1st person singular; Rowling is the only recent exception I know
>Women are published more than every other race and sex
>Book by women are read by teenagers
>Plus, there's fanfiction, also made of women and for women and with the majority of written material being 1st person view
>The whole writing coomunity is women writing in 1st person, getting published, and influencing readers and burgeoning writers
This is one obvious example where female exclusivity practices and female writing choices led to an intellectual decline.
I don't women writers and kids who read them ever know what postmodernism is outside a ChatGPT overview, in the best case. It's all female fetish porn - disguised as different genres if slop, written from the 1st person due to the inability for a woman to put herself in someone else's shoes and to increase submersion for the female reader and thus make very spicy the moments of rape at the hand of the cluster B main psychopath with the full sign of an incipient sexual maniac of the Bundy variety - that ruins brains.

This seems like just a meme that retards are taking literally. Even if the literary taste among zoomers is shifting, it's just that, taste, not ability. In what fucking world would someone be literate and technically able to read first person but simultaneously technically unable to read third person? It's a matter of preference. As usual, juvenoia takes hold and youngs get blamed for everything.

I read one when I was a teenager, but it was romance slop for teen girls.
"Why We Broke Up" by Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) - it's framed as a series of letters from a teenage girl to her ex boyfriend, i.e. You.

I thought it was clever back then, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that fucks around on this board.

Why on earth would anyone choose to read in third person? It’s simply not realistic. Do you think in third person? Of course not. And if you believe that reading third-person narratives somehow makes you inherently more intellectual, well, I’ve got some bad news for you, my friend.

If you prefer third person, then you are a literary cuck. Yes, you read that right. Do you want to experience fucking your wife, feeling every goddamn touch and thrust firsthand? Or would you rather be like a third person, sitting in a chair and watching another man do it for you?

Seems fishy. I doubt that kid's interest in books generally speaking has changed much since the 90s. A few read books for fun and most don't. The only difference now is that kids have smart phones and social media, which means reading comments. I know it's gay and retarded to count that as reading, but technically, a TV brain 90s kid did less reading than a doomscrolling zoomer.
