>Women by Charles Bukowski
Strange, all my favourites are largely from a teenager and I would never have discovered them if it wasn't for Buk. I remember the passage in Women where he's being interviewed and talks about Hamsun and Celine, and the part where Burroughs looks at him with contempt from across the room. Sadly Buk doesn't make the cut for me no more. Post Office is still a great read, though.

my "defining" books:
The Man who was Thursday/Orthodoxy - Chesterton
Welcome to the NHK - Tatsuhiko Takimoto
Wonderful Fool - Shusaku Endo
The Medium is the Massage - Mcluhan
What is Called Thinking - Martin Heidegger
The Gay Science - Nietzsche
Preparation for Death - Alphonsus Ligouri
The Spiritual Combat - Lorenzo Scupoli

i feel like im missing the greeks and they have had a huge impact on me but it's just hard to specify 1 book like the republic or NE maybe but for me those authors are much less "one book" and is more their work in general.

I have a weird thing where I have books I am very "sentimental" towards while they aren't even my favorite books. I didn't even give some of these 5/5 on goodreads (some even got 3/5) but my mind just goes back to them constantly and they have kinda shaped me more.

While other books I liked more reading them they didn't have as lingering an effect...

Can't forget The Screwtape Letters, by CS Lewis, The Anti-Christian Conspiracy, by Msr. Henri Delassus, and The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion — the only plagiarism in History to be written before the "original" work!

Haven't read much Pessoa yet, but ordered Disquiet a few weeks ago-- would you rec starting elsewhere? (I know that they're bits and pieces of works not published in his lifetime)

>A Glastonbury Romance by John Cowper Powys
This sounds like the kind of book I'd love to read and sounds very similar in ways to a novel I'm writing (British mythology ingrained into a modern day look at Britain politically and socially). Cheers for the rec.

I've read a few different Heller novels. Picture this was neat, but otherwise nothing special. Good as Gold was competent, but again, nothing stands out. Catch-22 is incredibly overrated, but Something Happened is genuinely great. Have you read it? I'm only asking because a lot of people ignore it because of how they either were disappointed by Catch-22 or hate that it is nothing like Catch-22.

Norm's "memoir" is such a huge leap in quality from other books by stand-up comedians I have read. Norm has an actual narrative that carries between his bits, the framing story with the ghost writer, and how it has touching moments at times.

After I finished The Remains of the Day, I had to sit down for a while and just stew in the way it made me feel. Great book.

>Slaughterhouse-V
I hate this book, the short choppy sentences get extremely tiring as the novel goes on. Metaphors and themes aside, it felt like a chore to read. Dune Messiah is a cool pick though, I don't think Dune(The standalone novel) is a good story unless you include Messiah.

Disquiet isn't as good as Pessoa's other work imo since it's devoid of his other heteronyms which is the best part about reading Pessoa.

I have a collection entitled "Pessoa and Company" that has a selection of poems from like 5 different heteronyms of his and it's perfect imo

It's truly unique and beautiful. I'm pretty sure it's not a Japanese artist that did concept art for Chrono Trigger, Hosono or something like that?
