I think I've finally found an alternative to conflict in storytelling.

Conflict is not a mandatory thing.
You can get a similar effect to conflict, with novelty.

What do I mean, instead of conflict, you can use a piece of lore or informational retrieval that takes the character to move towards a newer point in the seek of a new informational novelty event.

It is the discovery of a newer point to move and the movement towards that point, that produces a similar avoidance of boredom and produced a flow in the story.

It is not the lack of conflict that bores a story, but simply it's stagnation without novelty that causes boredom.

This is just a charatcer being in conflict with his ignorance. He wants to know something but is impeded by his lack of knowing so he ventures forth to conquer it

Or also can be about discovery or self mastery.

A story about spending 10 years to capture the perfect spot to paint a masterpiece you saw as a child, can capture what I mean, without the need of conflict.

Understanding conflict in a literal way makes for an entry-level piece of advice. On another level, it simply means change, and there is quite literally no way to avoid it as one either reads or writes a book. I think what makes one boring or captivating are very arbitrary, personal things.

Any opposition to a desired outcome/goal is conflict in a narrative sense. Achieving self-mastery or discovering new things is about defeating weakness and the unknown.

Inner conflict is still conflict. Novelty isn't an alternative to conflict if it's just being used as inner conflict under a different moniker

yes, but I was talking that two oposing forces is not required.

There's not an oposite force in the MC wanting to find the perfect spot to capture his picture he had as a child.

>but there's inner conflict
No, because there's really not an oposite forced that will kill him if he doesn't suceed.

Your own artistic expectations is not an oposite force.

>Your own artistic expectations is not an opposite force.
It is though. You don't need a violent/hostile external factor for a force to be considered in opposition to another.
