nephew, 14, is reading-resistant
want to get him an engaging book that might

Depends on what he likes. It's easy if he likes games like EU 4 or Total War Rome II. Probably pretty hard if he likes Minecraft and CS. It has to come from a place that he's organically interested in, or he's going to be offput.

A book is an extremely poor gift for someone who doesn’t read.

>giving books to a 14-year-old gamer
Unless he's a kind of a nerd who reads fantasy, this is doomed from the beginning.

Trippy which-way book. Call it an entertainment backup.

Genuinely The Lord of the Rings. Its the sort of thing that scratches the urge for adventure that video games are genuinely too fucking shallow to properly do.

That's a bad idea. Lord of the Rings is not a book that teenagers who don't read will enjoy. He's too old to enjoy the adventure and too young to appreciate the writing, not to mention the length.

The perfect "first" book will obviously depend on the person, so I would advise getting him something that fits his interests. If you aren't sure about them, then generally decent options are sci-fi/fantasy, something like Pratchett's wizards series, Hyperion might be good too. I'd probably get Fahrenheit 451, because the opening is unbeatable.

Just tell him to join the military: he'll either like it or be turned toward wanting to not be a retard after dealing some of the biggest retards he'll ever meet.

don't bother. he will call you 'unc' and decline to read. if he wants to read, he will do it himself

It would have to be something that isn't competing with games or movies. So edgy stuff like Clockwork Orange

Thanks guys, what you all say does make sense and I guess I was overstepping a bit here.
Really appreciate the input.
He does love soccer, if anyone has read a novel about elite-level soccer they'd recommend that would be good. I guess I'll bring him something else.
Thanks again!

Gamer/Bro-speak
You have to take an interest in other people's hobbies if you want to introduce them to your own.

Give him Blue Lock. It's not literature but might set him on the path

An easy to read guide on Greek or Norse mythology or Roman/Egyptian history. Something that will introduce him to areas of interest in history and western culture so he can easily go from there.

Agreed. The hobbit is a lot more suited to a young reader.

Page turners. Harry Potter that kind of stuff, is my recommendation.

Or maybe "A book only faggots don't read". Have it written by an AI or something. The table of contents could read like:

>1 The problem
>1.1 The Fag
>1.2 The Faggest
>1.3 Fagger
>
>2. The solution
