Is Robert Fitzgerald a trash translation? I got it for a couple dollars at a used book shop earlier this year.

Obviously Lattimore. Not only is his translation more accurate, it's far better poetry as well.

Between Chapman and Pope, poets who have translated Homer into completely original products of the English poetic tradition, Chapman is certainly greater as well as closer in spirit to Homer. I'm confident most people who prefer Pope just haven't developed a taste for Elizabethan verse. Pope is terribly artificial, narrow in style and about as far removed from the spirit of Homer as is possible. Chapman shares some of the virtues of Homer, Pope none of them.

>I have just finished Chapman's Homer. Did you ever read it?โ€”it has the most continuous power of interesting you all along, like a rapid original, if any, and in the uncommon excellence of the more finished parts goes beyond Fairfax or any of 'em. The meter is fourteen syllables and capable of all sweetness and grandeur. Cowper's damned blank verse detains you every step with some heavy Miltonism; Chapman gallops off with you his own free pace.
- Charles Lamb

>[Chapman's Homer] has no look, no air, of a translation. It is as truly an original poem as the Faery Queeneโ€”it will give you a small idea of Homer, though a far truer one than Pope's epigrams, or Cowper's cumbersome most anti-Homeric Miltonism. For Chapman writes and feels as a poetโ€”as Homer might have written had he lived in England under the reign of Queen Elizabeth.
- William Taylor Coleridge
