All the same, Cebes, I believe that this much is true: that we men are in the care of the gods, one of their possessions. Don't you think so?

Yes, I do.

Then take your own case; if one of your possessions were to destroy itself without intimation from you that you wanted it to die, wouldn't you be angry with it and punish it, if you had any means of doing so?

Certainly.

So if you look at it in this was I suppose it is not unreasonable to say that we must not put an end to ourselves until God sends some necessary circumstance

Just as an owner would be angry if something of theirs destroyed itself against their will, so too the gods would disapprove if a person ends their life without being "called" or permitted by divine necessity.

What does it mean for the gods to be good rulers of us if we're embodied, and embodiment is somehow an evil?

Socrates asserts that the souls of the good in Hades fare better than the souls of the bad (63c, see 72e), but, besides never arguing this claim, would it not seem to be in tension with Recollection, where all souls know everything, the same as all others? And if one objects that faring badly is dependent upon acting badly in life, what would explain why embodied souls, that know all things in Hades, differ in bodily conduct?

Socrates literally killed himself by taking poison. Legalize suicide

Legalizing suicide would be unethical.

>so too the gods would disapprove if a person ends their life without being "called" or permitted by divine necessity.

Phaedo 62c:
>"Perhaps, moreover, in this way it is not irrational that one ought not to kill oneself before a god has sent some necessity, just as the necessity is present now for us, too.”

You know the "divine necessity" is Athens putting him to death after imprisoning him, right?

To be fair, the only ones who can punish you for carrying it out are the gods themselves.

That just insanely depressing. You can't even kill yourself without your master's approval. No wonder communists hated classical civilizations so much.
