Please help me understand writing footnotes. Is it okay to combine the style for reference footnote (think superscript, with an index in the back) with an "extra information" footnote which autistically explains something in the text, and is actually meant to be read, and not ignored? I can't find an answer for this and it's driving me mad.

Yes. House of Leaves does this.

The problem is it's referenced non-fiction.

Find a style guide with an answer. I noticed recently that Wikipedia combines both, though I think it's a weird approach.
