Thank you for the recommendations. I've read Schรถnberg's book I'll look into the other three too. I'm not actually quite sure what I'm looking for, that's why I just asked for something ''unorthodox'' I'm just at an impasse when it comes to art in general but especially music. I've been at it my whole life but for the first time I feel completely lost. I had a similar situation with philosophy until I seriously got into Hegel so I'm looking for a similar experience with music.

I think Schopenhauer had a much better understanding of music than Hegel. I'm currently writing an essay on thoroughbass (or net total bass) a.) because it explains the physics behind harmony better than harmonics and b.) it is a concept that has not been adequately conveyed to people outside of the German speaking world.

The book is rather unorthodox but presents ideas which the open-minded reader should find interesting, though not strictly within the subject of "music theory" as it is known to us today. Cyril Scott did the work as a composer and deserves a fair hearing on his ideas of art history.

>I think Schopenhauer had a much better understanding of music than Hegel
I meant philosophy in general, rather than music. Reading Hegel changed everything for me, so I was maybe hoping to find a similar experience in regards to music theory.

I'd love to read it, I do speak German (if any recommendations are in German)

it will be published in English. Basically, the main idea says triads in the 12-tone equally tempered scale are vectors and a root is the direction of a vector. (chords with four to six tones are the product of extended harmony.)

So Hegel + music theory ? Not directly music theory but closest thing is just his stuff on aesthetics

Adorno was a pseud and I'm not saying that because he was Jewish. Schoenberg is an infinitely superior writer on music.

OP is just too retarded to understand classical music theory (4-part chorales, counterpoint, implied harmony, etc.).

i don't necessarily agree with everything cage says or even enjoy most of his music, but he's an engaging writer and thinks about it in a way that's interesting and gets the old noggin joggin even if you end up going a different direction
