It doesn’t make sense for Spanish to be the default language in American public schools.
>B-but we need to be able to communicate with our immigrant neighbors!!!
Very few students will achieve that level of fluency in Spanish, or any foreign language. What makes more sense is prioritizing reading skills in a foreign language so that students will leave school with at least a limited ability to engage with foreign language literature and news. And if reading ability is to be prioritized over conversational fluency, French makes a lot more sense because French literature holds a more important place in culture, and France today is a more important, more powerful country than any Spanish speaking country. French news media will give students a better look at European affairs than any Spanish publication.
