Everyone knows roman soldiers got paid partly in salt now but the extraction goes into prehistory, it’s not just the most crucial spice but necessary for life. We’re really in a lull in history where people can afford to give no shits about water and salt (in most places at least).
Haven’t read this book though so no idea how it treats the material. But I am a fan of the “Connections” (ancient tv show) approach to history. Focus in on something niche and show the reverberations of it in history. Follow a trail and see how it develops and cascades.
