I really have a special hatred for people who try to distill humanity/history down to one single factor. It reeks of unironic reddit energy, where some trivia spouting autist thinks he has a point by making meaningless and irrelevant connections.

John Green is a dogshit pseud writer, and this book is just a petrol garbage dumb fire of him trying to shill against capitalism, and calling the West racist by using investment in healthcare outside of first nations as evidence of systemic inequity, as if it's somehow our responsibility.

This is an interesting theme though since salt has been so foundational in history. Everyone knows roman soldiers got paid partly in salt now but the extraction goes into prehistory, it’s not just the most crucial spice but necessary for life. We’re really in a lull in history where people can afford to give no shits about water and salt (in most places at least).
Haven’t read this book though so no idea how it treats the material. But I am a fan of the “Connections” (ancient tv show) approach to history. Focus in on something niche and show the reverberations of it in history. Follow a trail and see how it develops and cascades.
